Politicians appeared dumfounded that a controversial issue had actually surfaced within the public realm; that constituents actually had the audacity to question their political motives. Or their expressions could have been mistaken as intellectual curiosity for an issue they have never bothered to adequately address. We doubt that, because city council appears to have intentionally whitewashed the issue in the first place.
