A 26-year-old police officer in Guelph, Ont. has died after an early morning collision with a city bus.
Guelph Police say Jennifer Kovach was on duty and en route to a call alone in her police cruiser when she crossed the centre line of the road and struck a Guelph Transit bus just after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Fire crews extracted Kovach from her cruiser to transport her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The female bus driver was also transported to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. No one else was on the bus when the crash happened.
Guelph Police Const. Michael Gatto said Kovach was on the force for two or three years, working as a front-line officer.
The approachable officer always had a smile on her face when he saw her.
“She was a hard worker who, everyday that she went out there, did her best.”
A Guelph police news release says Kovach had a zest for life, a strong sense of adventure and a gregarious smile. She was fulfilling a dream by working as a police officer.
She was the daughter of Guelph city councillor Gloria Kovach.
The crash is under investigation
