Man rescued after falling through ice
Halton Police rescued an intoxicated man early Sunday after he fell into Fairy Lake in Acton while attempting to walk across thin ice.

At 1:42 a.m., police received a 911 call from a citizen who witnessed a 49-year-old man fall through the ice after walking about 20 metres across the lake.

The depth of the water was deep enough that the victim could not stand on the lake bottom and he then held onto the sides of the ice to hold himself up. Police say the man had been drinking prior to and used poor judgment on deciding to walk across the very thin ice.

Two police officers were in the immediate area and used “throw rope” rescue safety bags for the victim to grab onto. The officers were then able to pull him out of the water and onto the ice.

Halton Hills Fire Department then attended and provided assistance to get the victim fully off the ice and to a Halton EMS ambulance.

The man was taken to the Georgetown Hospital and was treated for exposure and hypothermia as he had been in the water for approximately 10 minutes. He was released from hospital several hours later without any significant injury.
As the winter season approaches the public is reminded of the dangers of going out onto ice that forms on any ponds, creeks, or water reservoir ponds. No ice surface can be deemed safe until it is properly inspected to determine a minimum thickness of 10 centimetres (four inches) to walk on.

Parents in particular are reminded to be vigilant to ensure that their children do not go out onto uninspected open ice even though it may appear safe. Ice conditions can deteriorate very quickly due to weather changes and water flow in these areas. For additional information on this topic you can review material from the Life Saving Society at .
