Lawyer charged in multi-million dollar fraud

A former Streetsville lawyer has been charged with defrauding the public after a Peel Regional Police investigation revealed several people have been bilked out of close to $5 million.

After receiving complaints from the public, the force's Fraud Bureau began investigating the practices of the suspect.

Investigators allege the suspect accepted personal funds, entrusted to him by his clients, either to be held in trust or as short-term personal loans known as Promissory Notes. The clients later discovered the Promissory Notes were worthless and their money had disappeared.

To date, the investigation has identified six people as victims who have lost a total of more than $4.8 million between 2003-10.

Richard Chojnacki, 61, of Oakville, is charged. He worked as a local lawyer until 2010.
