Senate a mess

It has been called the “house of sober second thought” but recently, the “house of scandal” would be more appropriate.
The main job of the 105 members who make up the Senate Chamber is to examine bills proposed by the government. They debate the bills and propose amendments.
No bill can be passed without Senate approval. Members are unelected.
The NDP has long advocated the abolishment of the Senate and Senate reform has been talked about by both the Tories and Liberals for decades.
Yet, this bloated bureaucracy, which has been primarily filled through patronage appointments, has trundled along in virtual obscurity.
Until recently.
A handful of senators— and remember they are all unelected— are now under fire over alleged overspending, residency issues and even assault charges (see Patrick Brazeau).
Seriously does anyone, other than Pamela Wallin, truly believe she needed to rack up $350,000 in travel expenses during the past two years for “senate business”?
Wallin, who is facing an audit of her expenses has reportedly secretly repaid some of the cash.
Mike Duffy (see cartoon left) has promised to pay back $42,000 in housing allowances he obtained by claiming his primary residence was in Prince Edward Island when, in fact, he was living in Ottawa. He claims the form on residency was too “confusing”.
Dennis Patterson represents Nunavut in the Senate yet questions abound that his actual home is Vancouver. He was seen fleeing from a camera crew Monday looking to question him.
Hopefully, this maelstrom of bad press will lead to reform, if not a national referendum to hear the Canadian public’s views on this institution.
The “upper chamber” has never been at a lower point.
