A 91-year-old Milton woman is in critical condition after her clothes caught fire while she was cooking in her apartment Friday night.

Halton Regional Police said the residents of the building, located at 40 Ontario St., extinguished the fire before fire crews arrived, but the senior was still left with second- and third-degree burns.

She was rushed to Milton District Hospital and then sent to the burn unit at Hamilton General Hospital, where she remains with her family at her side.

Members of the Collision Reconstruction Unit, who are responsible for fire investigations in Halton, took over the investigation due to the seriousness of the womanÂ’s injuries. The fire is not considered suspicious.

Police would like to remind people to be extra careful in the use of candles, open gas flames, and electrical elements on stovetops when wearing long, loose-fitting clothing.
