BRAMPTON — With public outrage spreading over Mayor Susan Fennell’s expenses, she now says she will support a motion to deal with the issue in public today.

Last week, after it was disclosed through a Freedom of Information request by The Brampton Guardian that Fennell had expensed $186,000 for miscellaneous purchases — including $1,500 for orchestra tickets,$1,300 for Mandarin lessons and $3,190 for a seat upgrade to India — in less than three years, she called for a private meeting this week to discuss council spending.

Councillor John Sprovieri and others said a private meeting was unacceptable. But against the wishes of most councillors, the private briefing was scheduled to take place after this Wednesday’s council meeting.

Fennell’s spokesperson told the Star the private meeting was meant to follow the same process used by other departments for “budget briefings.”

Sprovieri said yesterday that he would be “bringing forward a motion Wednesday at the beginning of council to move the private ‘budget briefing’ scheduled right after onto the council agenda, so the meeting can take place in the open during the council session.”

Yesterday, all 11 council members were asked if they’d support the motion. The nine who responded all said they would — including, at the end of the day, Fennell herself.

Last week, Fennell referred to expenses, which have yet to be fully released or explained,“money well spent.”

Citizen activist George Startup said he hopes councillors will be tough with Fennell when the matter is dealt with today.

“Councillors need to restore confidence in the public. It’s been lost,” he said.“It’s now necessary to demand a full forensic audit of the mayor’s spending.”

Along with explanations of the recently disclosed expenses, Startup said he wants details of further costs involved in Fennell’s frequent travels, including why she took three staff to a June conference in Vancouver — an unusual number by municipal standards — and why she has a $46,000 driver, a $23,500 car allowance and a pricey, leased Lincoln Navigator SUV.

“A full audit — that would be money well spent,” he said.
