Updated: Charges laid in pedestrian fatality

A 37-year-old Georgetown woman has been charged with careless driving and driving with a handheld communications device after a crash on Guelph St. that killed an 89-year-old woman.

The collision occurred Dec. 17 while Patricia McCarthy, 89, of Georgetown was crossing in the crosswalk at Guelph St. at Sinclair Ave. McCarthy succumbed to her injuries Dec. 20.

Jennifer Unsworth is charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and has been summoned to appear in a Milton court March 25.

Sergeant Paul Davies, of the collision reconstruction unit, said police decided to lay HTA charges and not more serious criminal charges because “the evidence best fit HTA.”

He said he could not elaborate on what that evidence is.
