Caterpillar to close Toronto plant

330 employees at Toronto's Caterpillar plant near Pearson will be out of work by the middle of next year.

The company has announced it's closing its tunnel-boring machine factory by mid-2014 because the plant is no longer a "strategic growth opportunity".

Employees at the plant recently worked on four boring machines being used to chew through ground for construction of the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown LRT. Caterpillar says the shutdown won't impact existing customer contracts, with parts and service support to be continued through 2016.

The company says workers will be given severance package and help to find new jobs.

The closure comes after some 500 employees were let go when a London, ON, locomotive plant owned by a Caterpillar subsidiary was shut last year after a month-long lockout over a wage dispute with
