OPP lays over 8,000 charges over Canada Day Weekend

It was a busy Canada Day weekend for the Ontario Provincial Police as they announced that they laid over 8,000 total charges across the province over the long-weekend.


Focusing on overly aggressive drivers, the OPP laid a number charges including 7,032 charges throughout the province for speeding, 98 for impaired driving, 308 for distracted driving and 1,593 for various seat belt violations.

In addition to the number of charges that were laid, the OPP reported that two people died in separate motor vehicle collisions over the weekend.


At around 11 a.m. on July 1, the OPP responded to the report of a single motor vehicle collision on Hillsview Rd. in the municipality of Hastings Highlands. The investigation revealed that the car had been travelling west on Hillsview Rd. when it entered the north ditch and rolled onto itsÂ’ roof. George Cobb, the 56-year-old male driver of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene according to the OPP


The other one was in the Madoc area where a motorcyclist was rushed to hospital after he was struck. The motorcyclist died the next day as a result of the injuries according to Sgt. Dave Woodford.


The OPP also reported that there were no fatal boating or all-terrain vehicle incidents on patrolled waterways and trails over the weekend
