A man who fled to Canada after being sentenced to nine years in a California prison was arrested in Toronto on Wednesday.

Leonard Nwafor, 47, was handed jail time in 2010 after he submitted over $1 million of fake claims to Medicare through his Los Angeles-based power wheelchair company, court documents show. In return, he received $526,243 of kickback.

The court found him guilty of fraud in 2010.

But Nwafor, who police said is a native of Nigeria, didn’t attend his sentencing. Instead, he fled north and moved into a Toronto condo near Kipling Ave. and Steeles Ave W., police said.

A Los Angeles postal inspection service later named Nwafor one of their top 10 most wanted fugitives.

The Toronto Fugitive Squad was contacted by the United States Marshal in August of 2012 regarding Nwafor’s Canadian hideout, but it took four months for the agency to obtain an extradition warrant.

When the warrant was approved, the Toronto Fugitive Squad moved in on Nwafor’s apartment, arresting him on Wednesday.

Nwafor is now en route back to the United States, police said
