Witness, sources say younger Melvin rushed to hospital after incident

Jimmy Melvin Jr. was shot earlier this evening at an apartment building in the Cowie Hill area in Halifax, sources and a witness at the scene have told The Chronicle Herald.

Halifax Regional Police refused to confirm those reports.

Halifax police and ambulance crews raced to Ridgeway Towers at 30 Ridge Valley Rd., near the Northwest Arm, this evening after receiving a report that a 26-year-old had been shot.

A woman who had a pizza delivered to a ground-floor apartment at Ridgeway Towers was overheard saying "Little Jimmy Melvin" was shot.

The pizza was delivered from Jessys Pizza, where Mr. Melvin's father, Jimmy Sr., was shot at on Nov. 17. The senior Melvin was not hit, but was hurt when he dodged the bullet.

An employee at Jessys Pizza said Thursday night that workers were told to stop delivering to the Ridgeway Towers for the night.

It's unclear whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the townhouse.

It was also unclear at 6:25 p.m. whether this shooting is related to a recent spate of shootings involving the Melvin family from the Spryfield area. A police spokesman said it "certainly could be" and it "likely is" related to the recent shootings.

Jimmy Melvin Jr. was released at Supreme Court on Nov. 14 after some key witnesses changed their stories regarding charges he faced — robbery, unlawful confinement, assault causing bodily harm, weapons offences and break and enter — in connection with a March 2007 home invasion.

Three days after his release, someone tried to shoot his father, Jimmy Melvin Sr., outside a pizza shop on Herring Cove Road in Spryfield.

The next night, someone shot a Melvin associate, Jason Hallett, in the wrist outside Halifax’s IWK Health Centre.

There have been other recent shootings in the city.

A 20-year-old man was in fair condition in hospital on Saturday after a masked man shot him in the abdomen on Micmac Street in west-end Halifax.

In another incident, police rushed to an apartment building at 38 Vimy Ave. in Fairview on Monday night after a man was shot at in the area.
