“Trying to Locate Artwork”

Since: Mar 09

Saint John, N.B.

#1 Mar 19, 2009
I am trying to locate individuals who have artwork by former St. Mary's professor, Julius Zarand who would be willing to loan it to the University's Art Gallery for an exhibition of Mr. Zarand's work this coming November 09. If you are such an individual please get in touch. I need to compile a catalogue of possible items that can be loaned by the end of April.

It quite possibly is as he was in Munich at that time. Is there any possibility you could send a photo of the painting? hyslop@av.eastlink.ca

The painting I have is a portrait of a woman from Germany. Did Zarand do portraits?

Yes, Mr. Zarand is known as a portrait painter. While in Germany, he did several important pieces including one of the German author Thomas Mann. Before World War II he was commissioned by the Hungarian government to do a portrait of Pope Pius XII. My wife and I are trying to make a record of his works. Would love it if you could scan a picture of the painting to my e-mail hyslop@av.eastlink.ca. He is now 97 and my wife visits him often. If you like we could ask him if he remembers who is in the portrait.

I am unable to scan portrait. It was done in Munchen in 1942 and was of my mother-in-law, Ilse Irmgard Unterberg of Dinslaken.

To bad we didn't know that before. We just got
back from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbour.
That is a beautiful area and the weather was great.

What a shame, yes we spend summers at our home here. I'm afraid I don't get good cell or internet service where we live. Maybe I can get it scanned this fall.

I inherited a poorly framed seascape with the signiture J. Zarand in large block letters. I have always loved the seascape and I plan to have it re-framed.
My Aunt was a Dean at Memorial University. Perhaps she knew Julius.
Sorry to be too late for your show.
I would love to hear more about this artist.

I am quickly becoming fascinated with Mr. Zarand and his work.
I will take a photo of the seascape that I own and send it to you if you give me your email.

Will mention you the next time I see him which may be this coming week. His memory is not the best but he seems to recall long term things better than short term things, so there is a chance he will remember you. Good to hear that you still are painting. Any chance of seeing any of your work.
