As there is No website on the Independent reviews/ratings of the Apartments in the HRM area, I write this as a representative of a Tenant living in the Halifax area to create an awareness of the apartment safety and the quality of apartments in the Halifax area.

I live in the Clayton Park area in the Stonecrest village apartments.(one of the 80/85/90/95 buildings). Within the past 6 months there has been 2 reported burglary in the Stone crest village apartments. There is no private security or CCTV camera to watch the apartment buildings outside. Please keep in mind if you are looking for apartments in the Clayton Park area.

I too am frustrated by the inability to review my apartment building. I live in Scotia Towers on Brunswick Street and must warn against renting here. The building is infested with silverfish. The apartments are small and dark, and more expensive than they are worth. The management (who are impossible to contact) tries to gauge you for money at every turn with little reason. Although I haven't personally experienced this, many people have complained of bedbugs, as can be seen in the bedbug registry. They have policies which greatly inconvenience tenants but refuse to talk about changing them. For instance, the fact that they do not have suite numbers on the door system, and cannot list more than one person in each rental unit regularly makes me miss packages, which means I have to take 3 hours out of my day to bus to Dartmouth. I have asked for this to be change and they acted insulted that I should want people to be able to ring up to my apartment. Overall, there is just very little respect for the tenants in this apartment building.

Absolutely do not rent in Scotia Tower, 1991 Brunswick street, owned by Realstar. I cannot begin to describe the difficulty we've had. This place is, indeed, infested with silverfish. It is NEVER cleaned. I have read reports on bedbugs in the building, but haven't experienced them personally. There was an active brothel (reported in the Herald) in this building during the past year.
Most frustrating, the superintendents are absolutely incompetent. The simplest requests (e.g., replacement mailbox key) will take 5 calls/visits. If renting from any of the other apartments managed by the same group, I would HIGHLY advise against a preauthorized rent withdrawal from a bank account. Knowing how prone these idiots are to mistakes, and how unwilling they are to help you subsequently, providing bank info could be a disaster.

I have lived at Scotia Towers for many years and I can say for sure that I have never had any of the problems listed in the other posts. I have lived here for 13 yrs and all of my dealings with them have been great, I love living here. I like it so much that I have actually referred several friends. They do all kinds of tenant socials all throughout the year, send news letters out and even send out surveys each year to get our feedback. As far as getting in touch with someone their office is open 7 days a week, they are easily reachable by email, phone or fax and even late at night I have called with a noise complaint and I have spoken to one of the same people who work in the office. Unlike some places I lived I didn't get a voice mail, I actually spoke to one of them. For the person who said there was a brothel being run from here, you should have read a few of the follow up stories in the paper because it was actually at a hotel close by. I myself have never had any bed bugs and neither have any of my friends who live here, I think some people just have an axe to grind and what better way to do so where you get to do it anonymously. As a single female I like that my apartment number isn't listed on the intercom, just my name and a buzzer code. I think Scotia Towers and Realstar are great and I plan to stay here for as long as I can and I will continue to refer my friends. The internet is an amazing place that anyone can post whatever they like even if it isn't true and that is what I believe is the case with the other posts.

I agree with the all of these posts to a certain extent. Indeed, there is a silverfish infestation in this building (as I kill one or two of them a day in my apartment) and there are bedbugs too (my friend had them but I haven't). I find the management for the most part easy to get a hold of (except for Jim the building operator, it usually takes 2-5 days for him to return an e-mail). In the office itself the women there never let the phone ring off the hook and as for after hours they take calls personally from their homes and help you resolve your issues even if it is one in the morning. I do have to say that the building itself is in dire need of repair. An example of this is how the air filtration system has been offline since I've moved in two years ago and as such the vents that are interconnected between the apartments do nothing but bring smells in from other units. When I take a shower I can often smell garlic and weed. The building itself does need to be cleaned more often as there are always fingerprints on the glass doors and the laundry room is a mess most times. The building needs a DRASTIC makeover at least cosmetically with its faux birch bark wallpaper and pink and green desiged carpet. I have been told that they are going to be replacing it soon but I was also told that they would fix the air filtration unit two years ago when I moved in. I also hope to never experience the garbage room being offline again as that was a horrific experience last summer. Instead of chutes they made us go outside of the building to the back to throw it in a makeshift chute into an open dumpster. At first, although it was a pain, it somewhat worked, but as the months went by and the summer got hotter people got more fed up and just left their garbage at the base of the chute. I have tried to throw my garbage down the chute with black flies all around me as a result. People also just threw it outside of the door as well and piled it that way as well as left it in the elevators to ride all day or in the hallways of our residential areas. There are also some safety issues with that area of the building as it is low lit and easy to fall when there is ice on the ground (and yes it was offline that long for there to be blazing summer and ice on the ground). Not to mention it is dangerous for other reasons such as being attacked while disposing of your garbage at night (a friend of a friend was approached by a gang of men out there, she threw her garbage at them and ran back inside). The pool also needs to be put into effect a lot sooner than it is....last summer was very hot early on and they didn't get the pool up and running till mid to late July! Overall, the only thing that keeps me here is the fact that it is a hassle to move and I love the location and the view (but that has nothing to do with that actual building, does it?). Judge for yourself when you have an apartment viewing, but Scotia Towers leaves a lot to be desired....

A site will be up and running in a few weeks as I just moved here and found it hard to find a place. Just found one but it was hard to find. So I decided to create a site that will have everyplace that rents on 1 site and will also allow visitors to the site do reviews on buildings and landlords.
Ocean Towers

My son had been looking for an apartment. We had a viewing at ocean towers and filled out an application and a check for a security deposit. We were told that if he was approved the deposit check was non-refundable. We asked how long an approval would take. Ocean Towers repied that we would have an approval in a couple days. After not hearing from them and leaving it for a week we resumed apartment hunting assuming since we had heard nothing he was not approved. We found another apartment, i then checked my bank account and found the check I had written for Ocean Towers had been cashed. I contacted them and let them know this situation was unacceptable and asked them to return the security. They had told me that they had left a message on my sons phone the day after we were in notifying him of his approval and the deposit would not be returned. I secured records of my sons phone usage which did not show any record of their call. I contacted them again with this information; however, have not responded...that was a few days ago. Seems they are very unresponsive when you offer proof of their theiving ways. I have secured a lawyer who will get my deposit, plus legal fees, plus punitive damages. They will end up paying more in the end. I suppose they figure nobody will get a lawyer for 435.00, but they are making a killing on the deposit scam...and I will get more in the end. They are theives no better than the bedbugs I heard live there who live off of unsuspecting hosts.

They have to return the deposit they failed to provide an answer in a timely manner in regards to the approval or non-approval of the application a deposit is only non-refundable is if they gave an approval of the application in a timely manner and if the applicant of the application does not wish to move in.

Is anyone familiar with a building called Church-Hill Apartments down around the Morris Street area? I know the building but I can't find any reviews from people who lived there. I'd like to know what kind of a place it is.

I wish I could meet you - because I agree wholeheartedly with EVERYTHING you say. The safety issue, the smell of weed in the bathroom and the absolute disgrace I feel when people come to visit me in this place.
Someone else on this thread mentioned the surveys RealStar conducts annually. Yes, in principle, it's a dandy idea. But have I seen any direct changes as a result of the survey? No, I don't believe so.
I regret each day that I chose to live here.

Hello, I was a tenant of Tower Arms Apartments at 1104 Tower Rd. The apartments are absolutely tiny, too small for a single person to live comfortably. There are mice and even rats in many of the ground floor apartments. During the warmer months there are constant bug infestations. The building itself is in terrible shape. The ownership is incredibly shady, hires workers who steal (was stolen from personally during a renovation) and they often pay under the table. The apartment is also next door to the Phoenix House which creates a ton of chaos, often cops, fights, unruly behavior making it impossible to keep a 9-5 job while living there. I am extremely glad that I finally left those apartments. They are over priced and the living conditions are miserable.

I've been living in the building for a year and it's very quiet. Management keep it tidy and clean and they have a no nonsense/no party kind of policy. The building is under new owners and are renovating as many units as possible as it's definately due for some upgrades. I came here to look up reports of bed bugs in the area because I've never had a problem nor have I heard from any of the other tenants that they have.

Anyone have any comments on Clayton Park Towers? I had a viewing last year and it seemed nice, but as I learned with my current apartment, appearances can be deceiving.

I have had many problems with my apartment at 1152 South park st (can apply to 1150 and 1154 also) in Halifax and with Olympus Properties. First of all, the place is old and the landlords do not want to put the lease possible amount of money into fixing it. For example, my back door was rotten and leaked in water during those rainy days. It took about a year, which included 2-3 phone calls and 5-6 emails, before the landlords decided to change the door. Same goes for my toilet. They would cheaply fix the mechanism only to break again a few months later. I ended up fixing it myself.

Last year, we had a huge mice problem. Again, it took many phone calls (made by the tenants in unit 5 mostly) and the threat of a law suit for the company to call in exterminators and deal with the problem.

I've also experienced an invasion of property when someone from the company entered my apartment without permission, walked all over the floor and my yoga mat with salty/rocky winter boot. This was during the cold spell in the winter of 2013 when I asked if there was a problem with the pipes because the water stopped running out of the taps. Water still stops running when the weather goes below -15C.

Recently, I found out that my storage unit containing personal items, located in the basement of the house, was cleared by the landlord without permission and locked for further use. I was told that a notice was placed at the front doors and in the laundry room but no one in the building has seen such a notice. There are 5 units in the building. It would seem that placing a notice in each mailbox was too difficult. They are now charging for the space, which is not worth a penny!

In all, my experience with this apartment and Olympus Properties has been horrible. They are only in for the money and will charge obscene amounts (i.e. the extra storage space) that are not worth the price.

Can anybody tell me anything about Southpoint Apartments? It's run by Universal and I was considering moving there. I've seen the building and it looks nice enough but I want to know from anyone who has lived there what kind of a place it is such as if there are any pest problems, noise, etc. Any help at all would be great. Thanks.

Do not rent at 1670 Walnut Street. My roommate became physically ill from the mould infestation in her bedroom, and the landlords refused to do anything about it. Not to mention the flat is crawling with mice.

We are also extremely fed up with the level of maintenance of the flat. Any problems we have had we have had to fix ourselves, as the landlords refuse to answer phone calls/ emails. This is extremely difficult when living with three young women. We have had to to fix toilets, light fixtures, doors, etc. with no help from the landlord.

5 Caxton Close. Two years ago I would have told you that this place is like coming home to the country after a long work week in the city. Two years ago, the super had a new girlfriend move in with him. OMG!!! The woman uses foul and derogative language with the tenants. Both supers have threatened to lock people out of their apartments, take and sell the tenants furniture, come into your apartment without notice. As tenants, we talk in the laundry room. I am told that two other tenants have left the building due to the super's girlfriend. A VERY foul mouth. I guess it was my turn today. As I was leaving the building this evening, she charged at me ranting something (I couldn't make out what she was saying because she was screaming) When she charged at me I grabbed her wrist to prevent her from doing any harm. She got loose, pulled me by the hair and just started punching like she was Rocky!! Blew me out of the water. I have never had this sort of experience with a super/landlord before. I was shocked! She wouldn't let me back into the building...seriously, she blocked the door with her body. I was so upset and frightened, I got in my car, went down the street and called the cops. OMG!! This is one of the craziest things I have ever experienced!
