Frankly, Alberta can have all of the prisons that it wants. It fits with their culture. As for Saskatchewan and Manitoba lets call a spade a spade. This is about not dealing with poverty and addictions and I suspect that similar problems exist across the country. Keeping people longer affords a false sense of security for a community. Prisons DO NOT turn out rehabilitated people, it releases people who generally have no more than a grade ten education, very few job skills and certainly not habits required for successful re-entry into the community. More time incarcerated does not necessarily equal better social skills or education or motivation.Won't it get too expensive to put offenders through programs. You have to feed more people, guard more people etc.

Almost all prisoners are related to someone in the community. How did that happen. About a thousand people from Winnipeg are being held out of everyone's sight only to be released with marginal support and few real opportunities. Is it your cousin, my dad, your sister. Who are all of these evil people. There are people who should be locked up until eternity but that is the exception. Providing more beds just allows our government to temporarily "quiet" the outcry about crime. It does not address crime.

The Building on Kennedy was suppose to ease the overcrowding of the previous Public Safety Detention Centre. Within a year and a half it was pretty much at fill capacity. It is easy to fill jails and prisons and much harder to empty and keep then empty and that is not all the offender's doing. It is a system going in a very bad direction. It is as if someone put credence in U.S Justice even when it was obvious that they were not the country to emulate on this issue.

It looks as if there is a clone of the old Vic Toews being the mouthpiece. What happened to the guy who use to step up as a voice of reason.

Harper has a major creditability problem. His party talks of high crime rates, but the Canadian Gov't shows just the opposite.

Instead of more prisons, why not allow healing circle intervention for Aboriginals with less serious crimes, as their percentage of incarceration is off the charts.

Harpers party is doing the right thing on immigration. Canada does need to be tougher, and more realistic.

2009 (Previous release)
Police-reported crime in Canada continues to decline. Both the volume and severity of police-reported crime fell in 2009, continuing the downward trend seen over the past decade.

Nearly 2.2 million crimes were reported to police in 2009, about 43,000 fewer than in 2008. Overall, three property crimes accounted for the majority of this drop: 17,000 fewer motor vehicle thefts, 10,000 fewer mischief offences and 5,000 fewer break-ins.

The crime rate, a measure of the volume of crime reported to police, fell 3% in 2009 and was 17% lower than a decade ago.
The Crime Severity Index (CSI), a measure of the seriousness of police-reported crime, declined 4% in 2009 and stood 22% lower than in 1999.

Violent crimes, which range in seriousness from harassing phone calls to homicide, accounted for about 1 in 5 crimes in 2009. Police-reported violent crime in Canada is also declining, but to a lesser extent than overall crime.

Police identified about 165,000 youth aged 12 to 17 accused of a criminal offence in 2009. Both the number of crimes and the seriousness of crimes committed by youth have generally been declining since 2001, including a slight drop in 2009.

Well I guess we don't need more prisons then.

As much saying this bothers me, I want to see harper stay in a minority Gov't.

Do you feel Iggy has gone to school long enough to beat harper? Or is it just a gut feeling.
