Soaring loonie hurts lobster industry as Maritime fishing season opens

“Still, prices for consumers should be lower.”

- Canada's high-flying loonie is bad news for Maritime lobster fishermen, but consumers of the tasty crustaceans could be in for a treat.

Fishermen in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are bracing for a difficult year as the fall fishing season opens on the Bay of Fundy amid reports of low prices and weak markets.

Most of the lobsters caught in the Maritimes are exported to the United States - roughly 70 per cent of the total catch.

Melanie Sonnenberg of the Grand Manan Fishermen's Association in New Brunswick said Wednesday fishermen are caught in a crunch between rising operating costs, especially for fuel, and lobster prices that are plummeting because of the strong Canadian dollar. Read more

Good, I'm glad your money is flying high. Now you'll know how it feels to get nothing for your hard work just like we all have when you flooded our markets in the past. I hope things turn around so far that Canada turns into the toilet bowl insted of the US, maybe we can make a little money off you!!!

my comment regarding the toilet bowl is refering to the major trade defficet. where all the countries of the world use the US to flush its products down while we cant seem to get them (other counties) to buy and use our products. but now when things turn and the American dollor is worth nothing then all these countries will then want our products. and the companies in canada and mexico will ship jobs here to the US because the labor will be considered cheap.Oh and by the way yes I know we are heading down the flush. All good things come to an end at some point in time. LOL

So Mr. Wayne from Maine you think that you know it all do you, for your information, there are plenty of Canadians that know all to well what it feels like to get nothing for all their hard work!!! The cost of living in Canada is far higher than that of the US and the US has made plenty of money off us Canadians thank you very much, so quit your damn boohooing and suck it up. You do seem to have a major chip on your shoulder towards Canada for some reason. How petty is it to wish your neighbour the same downfall your country is experiencing!! I will tell you this...stay the hell where you are we don't want you or your attitude here!!
