As worthy as the urban chicken concept is,
there is nothing like a chicken coup for attracting rats if it isn't properly maintained.
Rats were a big problem in Toronto until urban agriculture was banished from the big city?
The other problem is insects.
Without pesticides chicken dung, feathers and insects are a subpopulation that most are not capable of dealing with.
As those looking after the chickens age and lose stamina, animal husbandry suffers in lock-step.
On the other hand, we need something like this or the next generation will be completely unprepared to feed themselves should so sort of catastrophe cause the food supply system to fail.
At some point it will.
Another dimension of the problem concerns the Black Plague which is alive and well and marching across the US southwest courtesy of a species of desert rat.
Once that hits a big city, disaster is sure to follow.
Fleas, rats and poultry have a symbiotic relationship that when combined with the
Black Plague will be hard to stop.
