Dalton McGuinty tells Catholic church he's in charge of schools

There are 6 comments on the www.thestar.com story from May 30, 2012, titled Dalton McGuinty tells Catholic church he's in charge of schools. In it, www.thestar.com reports that:

The provincial government - not the Catholic church - is the higher power when it comes to running Ontario schools, says Premier Dalton McGuinty.

Editor's note: in Ontario Canada, Catholic schools are fully funded by tax dollars, just like public schools. That means they must follow the rules set up for public schools. Catholic schools in Ontario have decided to refuse to follow new public school anti-bullying laws that prohibit anti-gay discrimination which has put them in conflict with provincial authorities.

Tell the Catholics the Dark Ages are over and that they lost their power to rule the world.

Has the RCC threatened to exit the schooling business in Canada entirely in protest, as they did with MA and DC social services govt contracts for adoption and so forth?

We could only hope.

Imagine the boost to public schools if all the tax money that went to Catholic schools and their separate school board offices, facilities, administrators, etc. went back to the public schools which serve everyone.

..... What governs is the CONSTITUTION (look it up!). It has education in the responsibility list of the various provinces of Canada. And in a tit-for-tat provision, as I remember it, it required in 1867 (The British North America Act) that Ontario must have a Catholic Separate School System just as Quebec must have a Protestant Separate School System. But since then Quebec got a constitutional amendment so that, as I remember it, it now relates to the English language instead of the Protestant religion there.
..... Possibly Ontario also should get the Constitution amended so that it will say that Ontario must have French-speaking schools, ignoring religion too.

Ontario does have French language school boards already. I grew up east of Ottawa, and in the region there they have
- English public school system
- English Catholic school system
- French Catholic school system

I think there might even be a French public school system too.

Each of those has their own separate school board, complete with buildings, budgets, etc. independent of the others. A lot of people in the Ottawa area back when I used to live there complained about the unnecessary cost of those duplicated services.
