They don't have to go to that expense, I already know the cigarettes I smoke are contraband and I will continue to do so.

Illegal tobacco is being supplied to underage children. That should be stopped.

Tobacco companies on the reserves should follow the same rules as the rest of Canada.

Why the hell should First Nations get tax free anything? They get all the perks, yet put no effort into it, and for no reason these people are set above everyone else. My daughter will not use a status card, or Indian fare as she puts it, it is shameful, it is being a dependant, and not a contributor to society as a whole.

Indians should follow the same rules as all Canada, or get out. Same as would be said to anyone who does not want to follow the rules here.
There is new evidence out that may prove that the Indian was not here first. And what does first have to do with anything, sounds grade school to me.
And giving them a break on something that is bad for their health (I wonder if they get a tax break on the booze the spend their cheques on, Kraft dinner, pop and chips for the kids), seems to me to defeat the purpose. Isn't the government suppose to be concerned about the health of these people too. Or is this just another example of government ass kissing?

blame us for it.

So you are saying you are the origin of the species? The alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end.
Maybe you people migrated here, slaughtered every last one of the "purple people" and if there is one of them you owe THEM restitution. You would think with listening to the natives that this was Israel or something. Far from it. If the British Empire had so desired, there would not be a native population period. Ask them what they did to India.
I'm sick as hell of getting f'ed over by gov't corporations, and then listening to this crap.
The only one being genocided here is the f'ing 9-5 white working stiff that is getting screwed by politics, bourgeoise and special interests.

I've worked in housing complexes for natives. Helped build them. And seen them destroyed after six months. And then they have to be fixed.

This is my f'ing money.

This is a state paid for house. Like the former Yugoslavia gave to it's workers.

Some of us in this out of control capitalist society would kill for a state house. Being a proud worker (or as much pride as it is allowing these days). But no, we'll exist, pay the f'ing gov't, line the pockets of the corporations, and keep giving state welfare to SOME.

I'm sick as hell of hearing about it, sick as hell of paying for it, and pissed off at the whole system. It's take take take, whether it be Ottawa, Exxon, or whatever godforsaken treaty that "has to be honoured". Get up in the morning, work your ass off and dole it out to the vultures.

The taxes should never have been this high on a legal product.
Easy money for both governments with no regard to how it affect the legal industry, from tobacco growers to convenience stores.

The government through its greed has created this problem through the excessive implementation of taxes. A few years ago, illegal cigarettes cut into the legal market to the extent that Nova Scotia reduced their taxes, making the product more affordable legally and many people, myself included went back to buying the cigarettes at the corner store. Then the anti-smokers raised a hue and cry and the taxes were increased again to the point that a pack of smokes is $12.00 in the corner store. I buy mine at the reserve for $8.00 a pack and could get them much cheaper if I bought the bags of cigarettes but I find them too harsh and taste like crap, so I buy the legally manufactured cigarettes. I still enjoy smoking and it is one of the few vices that I have. I will quit whenever I feel that is what I want. Not because it is the politically correct thing to due at the moment, or because government decides to put pressure on me to do so. I will continue to purchase my brands of choice at the most affordable price regardless of whom is doing the selling period.

I would like to see cigarettes go up to $15 dollars a pack, and way over a hundred for a carton.

harleyhoney, the only problem if cigarettes go that high is that contraband and organized crime will continue to climb. In Ontario, tobacco taxes were reduced in the late 90s which put an end to smoke shops. In 2001 taxes were raised again and the problems are back.

Joan, that is pretty much the story right across the Country but the governments just can't seem to figure out that they are the cause of the problem. Illegal tobacco dealers aren't being charged under the Health Safety Act but under the criminal code relating to depriving the Government of taxes. It's all about the money but rather than utilizing common sense, they seem to thing the strong arm of the law can deal with it. Well the war on drugs sure is a success now isn't it? A lot of the criminal element that push drugs and illegal weapons also deal in tobacco. Which side is going to win under the current Government strategy? Raising the taxes inordinately simply makes criminals out of otherwise honest people.

Night Train: I agree.
We can't blame anyone for getting cheaper smokes.
The government is messing this up completely. They are masking the deeper problems like the air we breathe.
In southern Ontario smog is a much greater concern.
No incentives to get more cars off the roads to use more public transportation.(The big 3 would be very upset)
