Lack of French on labels gets food yanked from Nfld Store

Apr 22, 2012 Full story:

A Newfoundland-based independent grocery chain has had to pull several lines of products imported from Britain, after a complaint that the labels did not include French.

Colemans cannot offer a variety of specialty products until the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the labels meet federal standards.

Customer Graham Wells, a St. John's folk musician, brought the issue to light earlier this week through a Facebook post that led to a debate on language labelling and prompted Wells to write a ballad about the experience.

"I had asked the girl that was in the section what had happened to them and she said that there had been a complaint about a lack of French so they had to take everything away," Wells said.

Judy Bennett, a manager for Colemans at its Corner Brook headquarters, said the company had to make changes to comply with federal labelling rules.

"There are subtle differences between the labelling guidelines in Canada and the labelling guidelines in the U.K.," she said.
