Ex church minister Robert James Duthie fit to stand trial on sex charges

Canadian Crime News, National: Sex Offences/Offenders CHATHAM, Ont. - A former church minister from Chatham, Ont.,Robert James Duthie facing sexual assault charges has been deemed fit to stand trial. . He is charged with indecent assault and gross indecency over alleged incidents between 1975 and 1972 at Victoria Avenue United Church. Duthie, who is 68 and living in Cambridge, Ont. Police base the charges on claims made by a man who said he was assaulted over seven years, starting in 1975 when he was 12.

Rev. Robert Duthie was very instrumental in my spiritual growth when I attended his Wednesday night prayer and praise services at Lincoln Avenue United Church Cambridge. I find it hard to believe that this man would do any harm to anyone, yet on the other hand we are human and full of sin. We are all capable of doing any kind of crime because we are all full of sin. I do not condone sin of any kind but I know that not one of us is without sin. I am thankful that our God forgives and is always willing to accept us back into his fold when we admit our sins and ask His forgiveness. I am very thankful that God is our judge and NOT mankind, or for sure we would all be wiped out. My prayers are with him and with those he is accused of harming.

Robert Duthie was acquitted of all charges on December 4, 2008. I find it interesting that his name has been dragged through the mud for about two and a half years while his accuser goes unidentified. Of course, Chatham has a past history of trying and convicting a minister who was later acquitted (Rev. Russell Horsburgh). This time, they got it right.
