I liked the beaver. It is a central focus as to how Canada was developed.Of course, when you mention many other potential symbols, including the beaver, you will find that most Canadians have not been exposed to information about them or why they played a role in Canada's past.
There is nothing wrong with the leaf. I just wouldn't see it as historically relevant.
As for the rah, rah of patriotism that doesn't mean anything except we are not as boisterous as some. It does not reflect love of country.
