Hello,
Has anyone else used That Granite and Marble Place? We've approached them for a quote, and I'm curious about their background- how long have they been around?
Thank you everyone for your feedback on the various installers in Calgary.

I went to Granite Worx. I really liked their showroom, staff, service, guarantees, installers.. All in all I had a great experience with them. They were always there when I had any questions or concerns. The pricing was VERY reasonable, and the best that I could find. My granite looks beautiful thanks to Granite Worx. I would definitely recommend to any one who is looking to re-do their house.

Please allow and forgive me, but i have to rail and vent regarding the North American "granite" industry, commercialism, and the exploitable consumer. I am... a geo-scientist, an archaeologist, as well as a producer/fabricator of stone and i am in significant conflict (at a conscience level) with what i see, and have seen evolving in the industry over the last 30 years. Stone (i.e. granite or marble for our purposes)is as complex and infinitely variable as genetics. Truly, your existing or upcoming installations are never to be repeated or duplicated. Every pebble is its own fingerprint. This means to me that unless one has a true understanding of the rock that one is planning to install or has infinite trust in their contractor... one is buying a lottery ticket! The industry in north america has expanded at almost a geometric rate and 99% of the so-called experts in the industry are there for the sole purpose of making "a buck". Only 20 years ago, ALL of Canada's annual consumption of stone equaled that of Belgium!! That we are in an entirely exploitative and exploitable market in 2011..., is unquestionable! So... in this market only one of three things can happen if you are investing in stone:
1) One doesn't do enough research, trusts the SALESMAN and ends up with a disapointing and disheartening loss on investment.
2) One chooses their stone (with the help of an SALESMAN) based on the purpose and application of the stone (i.e. counter vs. fireplace vs. shower) and ends up with a disheartening and dissappointing loss on their financial and emotional investment.
3) One gets lucky... in other words, one has hit the lottery like-combination of the right choice of their stone, for the right application, AND a contractor or supplier that has a conscience and, despite his/her limited knowledge, really wants to do well for and by the customer. This is the only winning combination and it is a simply horseshoe "up...ss," luck!!!

For every consumer, or potential consumer, of natural stone out there... The choice of stone is one of the very best investments that you could make. It can, does, will, and has outlasted every human and every human generation that has existed on the planet! But first it requires an education for the consumer... in terms of the stone..., in terms of the application, and then in terms of choosing an educated, interested, and concerned fabricator/installer. It is one of the best investments we could make for our homes and the environment we could make!

All of you can and should ask why would i say things like this.... Well, i have a conscience... i currently work in the industry of "consumer stone" and know too much about it. I have studied and worked with rocks from all over the world (and out of this world), i understand stone and the understanding that our ancients had in utilizing them for our utility, beauty, and monument.

Should you be looking for a fabricator/supplier/installer of "granite" or "marble"... at the very, very least ask them this question... "is this stone igneous, metamorphic or, sedimentary? If one doesn't receive an immediate answer, or at the very, very least a willingness to find out... find another contractor!

I have no commercial interests in writing the note in this forum. If you are thinking about using stone in your homes then please research information about "stone"!!! DON'T look for companies that sell/fabricate/install stone! The art and industry are now equivalent to buying or being sold a used car... with an equivalent amount of consumer recourse!

Should you be thinking about granite i would be happy to advise you as best i can (without seeing it) on your choice of stone(s) or send you links on the best choice(s) for your application. [email protected]

Thank you for the forum....

We also ordered out kitchen from Granite IN-Direct in Barrie. This was around Feb. 2010. Their contract estimates 90 day delivery but also stipulated that a $300/day surcharge would apply if they had to wait for us to be ready. We ordered cabinets and counters and planned on new tile floors. So we expected delivery early in June and, in order to make sure we didn't make THEM wait, we tore everything out of our kitchen at the beginning of May and installed our floors...SO, we had no kitchen and began our wait. June came and we heard nothing. Finally we called and were told that it should arrive early in August. So there we were with no kitchen.
August arrived and we heard nothing. We finally called and were told by the head of cabinetry in Calgary, Steve Shanks, that he had a shipping container coming out of China that week and if he had to take a bunch of counters off of it, our kitchen would be on it and on the water, enroute to Canada. Their compensation to us was approximately 10% off our purchase price. Fine, just get me my kitchen. My wife asked him if we would have our kitchen by Thanksgiving, because we host our family every year. Shanks told us there should be no problem.
Shortly before Thanksgiving we got a call from the local office, telling us that our order should be arriving in Canada...the day after Thanksgiving. We called Shanks and when asked about further compensation, he told us we weren`t going to be compensated any further and if we weren`t happy, we simply wouldn`t be happy. Our kitchen install finally began around the last week of October...we had been without a kitchen for just shy of 6 months! The install was another host of problems. The supervisor was an idiot who didn`t come back after the first day because our neighbour had a golden retriever in their yard...he was afraid of the dog.
Measurements were off and one cupboard had to be cut down, meaning it was left doorless (it`s almost April 2011, and it`s still doorless). One of the pieces of granite needed to be cut at the shop and we were told by the installer that it only needed a couple hours work to fix. They just left a big hole in our counter and then didn`t bother scheduling 2 hours to get it finished, until I called the aforementioned idiot supervisor and yelled at him over the phone. Several finished panels didn`t show up with the order, we have no shelves in our corner base cabinets. We had ordered rollouts for 2 large cabinets which didn`t show up. In January, the rollouts arrived, but they didn`t fit. The installer was going to fix them, but then didnt come back for over a month. We`ve been given no communication about where all the remaining pieces are.
SO, if you`re considering using Granite Direct after reading this, you either have the patience of Job or you`re a nut. For goodness sake, it`s been over a year and we don`t know if there`s any end in sight....please steer clear...don`t call them, don`t bother getting a quote. A. Claus - Barrie, Ontario.

Sorry...correction on my previous post...it was Mike Shanks, not Steve Shanks. They also sent us a letter for a free bidet toilet seat...apparently all the rage in SE Asia...what a joke. Even that, they said we`d be contacted by their local office about it and we`ve never heard another thing.

I decided to use Hyatt Granite/Stone Calgary to up date our tired kitchen. We went to their show room on Saturday picked the stone from stock and they measured on Tues, arranged demo of existing counter tops on the following Sunday and installed on Tues. The whole experence was great, knowledge, professional, super product, follow up, if I didn't know better one might think they really care about their customers. They supplied the taps, sink, demo, install and we could not be happier. Go see them before you make your decision it will be worth the trip

I also went with Fine Line Granite.
The service was fantastic. They provided us with
interior decorator consultation, and had owners onsite for laser templating. They also owner supervised the installation. THe personal accountability was something unique to any of the
other companies we researched. They also have a lifetime sealer...so their Granite is Maintenance Free.
I highly recomend them to anyone wanting a superior level of service and craftsmanship.
As i have read in most of the comments about laser templating, you don't need it so you may have one piece, if owner is on site he must not have any other quotes to do at his office which gives him free time, and also to the owner if you check on sealers there is no "lifetime" sealer it is only there to give you the time to cleanup! Leave a cup or glass on your counter top over night and see if it leaves a ring from the cup or glass that you leave there. It is amazing what amature granite or marble owners will tell there clients!

I don't know the first thing about granite, marble, slate, etc. But I do know that if a person is in the granite industry for 27 years, has his marble masine ticket, tile setter ticket, had worked for one company for over 16 years and now owns and operates his own granite shop and STILL IS PASSIONATE about it, he must be doing something right. Check out Andy Bettinazzi at Stone Master Granite Inc. at 3812, 7st, SE in Calgary. He is a profectionist/artist. Nothing goes out the door without his approval! Just amazing work. You will not be disappointed.

I really need to vent regarding Granite Direct. I too was told my cabinets and counter would be ready in 3-4 months. That would have been November 2010. Then I was told it would be late December then March. Patiently and understandingly I waited. When it finally arrived in March I personally visited the shop and watched them write the scheduled install date on their calendar. One week before the scheduled install date I demolished the kitchen And prepped everything in order to speed up the install. When the day finally came for the install they said I was not on file. One week later they called to say that I needed to make full payment before they could continue. Needless to say I was not happy with that arrangement but after reviewing the contract it did state full payment is required when the cabinets arrive and before install. Reluctantly I made the full payment less 5% because I had no choice. I needed my kitchen! My family has been living without a stove and kitchen for over 3 weeks already. Currently I have no stove no oven, no cupboards for my grocery, but fortunately our fridge could be plugged in anywhere. It is now one month later, I have 80% of my cabinets installed and 1 of 4 section of counter top.
In the bathroom they attempted to install a broken(split right in half) granite vanity counter top but luckily my wife was home to tell them “Hell NO!. They said 3 weeks before a replacement vanity top comes in. I assume 2 months or more. Good thing I have another bathroom which I did myself a year prior. And it only took one week.
- 3 times I had different trades lined up to do work but had to cancel them due to the fact that I needed the cabinets installed first. Now from experience I will not book anyone until Granite Direct has done their part of the work.
With that being said, for the most part I am somewhat happy with the product, but again I have not checked it closely for I hope they will check it themselves and make the necessary correction/fix.(wishful thinking)
I am somewhat reluctant to post this as things might get worst since there is much more work to be done and they might revengefully decide to make things worst than it already is, but I am getting soooo frustrated and I need to vent. My life or my standard of living is a mess due to this company.
I have spent over $30,000 on Granite Direct cabinets and countertop alone and I feel my money would have been much better spent elsewhere. I would not like to see anyone go through the same ordeal I am encountering with Granite Direct and I would definitely not recommend them to anyone. It is now May and I jokingly say to my wife we should have it completed for our yearly Christmas gathering.

Hi RAC, I'm just following up on your question about that Granite and Marble Place. I know Shayne (the owner) as a customer and on a personal level as well, and from what I know he has at least 10 years of experience in the granite trade. The company itself has been around for about 4 years now. Shayne is very finicky, so he's trying to keep his shop on a smaller scale in order to be able to oversee all the work that comes out of his shop. He's able to custom make nearly anything that you may request, however if there is a certain type of stone that he wouldn't recommend due to brittleness, etc., he'll let you know in advance so you're well informed, rather than selling a bad product just to make a buck. His focus is completely on quality work.
If you're looking for countertops, this is the place to go. They can keep things simple and the prices low to stay within your budget, or do any crazy custom edges that you want! Plus, he can do fireplaces, tub surrounds, vanities, and pretty much anything else you may want done in your home in natural stone.
That should answer some of your questions!

One additional comment I think would be helpful to some people browsing this post is that Shayne also works with some ridiculously good carpentry, cabinet and tile guys, as well as some larger renovation companies in the city, so he can take on entire projects and have everything done for you if you need it. These are good honest people and you won't get ripped off like with the many granite shops out there.

I'm surprised at how many people go to Granite Direct and are surprised at the overpriced products and poor service. "Cutting out the middleman"? These guys get all of their stuff from China, and have it fabricated overseas!! So essentially, their advertising is bogus and you're paying double for the middleman. Why don't people go with a fabricator that does there stuff here in Calgary? THAT is cutting out the middleman!

Anyway, try Shayne, he does wicked work, and he's getting really busy so people will be having to wait for a few months to get quality at a low price soon. BUT this guy is worth your time.

I am also waiting for the rest of my install from July 2010. I too had my kitchen removed to speed up install only to be told my cupboards were not here. I have been waiting to finish my kitchen (backsplash and floors) since October !!!!! Now they are not even returning my calls. I cannot finish until the rest of my cupboards are in and the counter top fixed. The poor shape of most of my doors is disappointing to say the least. I am at my wits end. The BBB is now looking into it and I hope the local media will do a trouble shoot. How about a class action suit??? I am willing if anyone knows how to proceed. This company should be put out of business...

In my repy to Kari I stated that I have been waiting since October 2010 with ordering date July 2010. With a repacement cupboard, over window and edge cupboard and my lazy susan, tip out, glass doors, spice rack, and crown moulding including fix ups on poorly finished cupboard doors I still wait. Now they do not even return my calls.I am trying BBB and a local media trouble shooter hoping for the rest. How do class action suits work and why isn't there one to put this company out of business? Buyer beware has never been more fitting then with this company. I have never been rude or used profanity with the staff (only hired people which change frequently) but sometimes.....
