Mary Ann Whalen
MARION - Mary Ann Whalen of Marion passed away on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Community Health Care.
Mary was born on June 12, 1919, in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada, to John and Bernetta Hetherington.
She married William Thomas Whalen on Dec. 26, 1939, in Blackville, New Brunswick. William died on July 4, 1989, just short of their 50th year of marriage.
Mary became a United States citizen in 1986, after moving her family to Marion in 1953. She worked for Marion General Hospital for 20 years before retiring and volunteering both at Marion General and Smith Clinic.
Mary was a former member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge. She was an avid dart player and liked dancing and karaoke. She attended St. Mary Church.
Mary is survived by four children, Dean Joseph Whalen, Carleen Elizabeth (Carl) Schofield, Kenneth Patrick (Helen) Whalen and Terry James Whalen, all of Marion. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Dean Whalen Jr., Shay (Martin) Patterson, Jeremy Holsinger, Katrina (Robert) Bosley, Lisa (Shane) Oney, Robert Whalen, Scarlet Wilson, LaToya Andrick and Janice (David) Hamm, along with 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, from 4 p.m. till 7 p.m. at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors with the Rev. Father William J. Ferguson officiating. A private burial will be held at St. Mary Cemetery at a later date.
