"No drunks allowed" would not be racist but would be equally callous.
You can't say the girl is racist because there was nothing said about sober natives being unwelcome. And drunken whites may not be a problem in the area so they were not mentioned. So perhaps the racial stereotype exists only in the minds of those who attack the poor girl. Racist bastards. |

The native's here in Lethbridge are generally very good. The sign was RACIST. There is no excuse. There are no signs near East Hastings in Vancouver saying "no white druggies allowed". It could have been handled so much better. What about no pedestrian traffic allowed. or even, no drunks allowed... but to insult an entire population? That is abominable and defending it perpetuates the in-equlities faced daily by our minorities.

There is a problem with abusive drunk people of all races, but the fact is that in Lethbridge there are a lot more natives coming into businesses while intoxicated then any other race. I work in the hotel industry and I deal with drunk people all the time and about 85% of those people happen to be natives. This is just the facts as I have witnessed them. I get called racist all the time because I refuse to rent a room to anyone intoxicated. Alcohol isn't racist so how can not renting a room to a drunk person be a racist act? The natives in Lethbridge are way too quick to play the race card, and they use it as an explanation for everything. I believe everyone should start taking some personal responsibility instead of blaming society or their skin color. Attitude and the way you present yourself is what most people look at, not race. The native community has to stop stereotyping themselves and when that happens Lethbridge will be a lot less racist place to live.

This an interesting thread if you overlook some of the more childish, name calling, insulting posts. I would like to ask a few questions and would appreciate an honest answer from anyone connected to Lethbridge, please.(that means NOT YOU Articmenace).
At one time or another in our lives, we've all had to deal with drunk(s). It doesn't take much of an imagination to visualize what this girl, her co-workers, and the business put up with every day. My questions are: Is it the drunken behavior that the people from Lethbridge find intolerable? Or is it the natives themselves? Do the majority of natives in the area hold down jobs, maintain their homes, take good care of their children, and behave in an acceptable manner when interacting with the town of Lethbridge? Are the majority of natives pleasant to deal with and respectful to others when they interact with the community? Why weren't the police involved if the problem was ongoing? That will do for starters. Thanks ahead a time. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the natives legally need a pass to be allowed to leave the reservation? I don't think that law has been repealed.
Growing up in Fort Macleod (between 2 reservations), I certainly had exposure to the native population. I have had good relations and I have had bad relations with native people. All in all, the natives have many many many problems (not saying the whities don't). They as a population are also one (only one of many) of broader society's problems. I have been accused of being racist for not giving money to panhandlers. I have been accused of being racist for not giving money to drunks. I have been accused of being racist for not giving rides home to addicts. I have been accused of being racist for chasing belligerent drunks off my property. I have been accused of being racist for crossing the street so as not to have to deal with gangs or persistant nuisances. Am I racist? I think not. Am I prejudiced and do I stereotype? I believe I do. I believe it is also mainly the result of having to deal more with the nuisances of the native population and not having a chance to deal often with those that are respectable, motivated, and proud people. The reason? They are busy living their own lives and not bothering (this does not include associating with) the rest of society. How do we solve these issues? Well, after much thought and considerations over many years, the answer is not simple or even clear. For those that ask naive questions I will not take the time to try and explain. You have to grow up in or live a long time among the communities with significant native populations to even begin to understand the issues. It's like asking why do Americans think like that... or why did the Germans do that... or what are the Chinese eating...??? you have to live there and be one of them to know. For Canadian Cutie to answer your questions: 1: It would be the homeless drunk natives. 2: The appearance is no. 3: With the exception to those classified in question one. Yes. 4: The police usually are, but it is like giving away your dog. He tends to find his way back quickly. |

Ont. Appeal Court to hear case of woman fired from Tim Hortons for stealing toonie “Our main point of appeal is that a theft is not the mere act of taking money from the till and putting it in the tip cup” - The case of a pregnant woman who was fired from a Tim Hortons store in Toronto for allegedly stealing a toonie will go to the Ontario Court of Appeal on Wednesday. Charlene Walsh gets her day in court a week after a single mother of four was fired from a Tim Hortons outlet in London, Ont., for giving a free Timbit to a baby. Walsh was fired from the Tim Hortons she worked at in June 1999, when she was seven months pregnant. The franchise managers and owner alleged she stole the $2 coin, but Walsh has maintained she earned the money in tips. Read more http://www.topix.net/ca/ontario/2008/05/ont-a... I know this is an old thread but, I gotta say, you the prejudice and racist whites, are the reason we cant get over it. It still exist today. If there weren't no law, then you would still be killing natives and their baby's. Our ancestors paid with their life so that you can live here. Alcohol is a drug that you introduced to be a slow genocide for our people. Look at history and see how much the europeans destroyed innocent lives. You racist cowards, and see if you'll forget so easy. All "Native" Americans arn't drunks. I bet you have one in your family as well that's just like that. A drunk, a drug addict, and a racist coward to fit. I don't seek sympathy from you white folk, I see hate in everyone of your eyes. If you show respect to me, I'll show respect to you.
