From Safelink.com :

SafeLink phones are not paid for by taxpayers or the federal government. TracFone Wireless pays for the phones and also the cost of promoting its SafeLink program to make sure that eligible consumers know about the program

I would just like to say to those people who are bitching and screaming about the lazy bums not working.. I so agree with you about these phone deals I just found out about it myself! and that's why i am applying for one today! March 21, 2011, I have been on SSI, for an Anoxic Brain Injury, which I recieved 5 years ago and in return enabled me to get Medicaid card, Food Stamps, but otherwise worked until then! so the feelings are so understood but there are a few of us that are not losers please keep it in mind that some day It just might be you on this end! not being able to work and having to have the help of the state to survive! Because If hadn't had I don't know what my kids and I would have done!=] thankful to be alive in Ohio!

They are paid for by a fee tacked onto everyone's phone bills.

So, it is still welfare.
