Who in the world do the low income folks call for 250 min. Hopefully they are making connections for jobs, but I doubt it. Surely the government could spend my hard earned dollars on something more usefull. Perhaps teaching the poor better skills so that could get jobs. The way I see it, the only need they would have for a cell phone would be for emergencies or job hunting.
you know they aren't calling about jobs. The reason I say that is if they make "too much" they get kicked off Section 8,Welfare,food stamps, free telephone and so on. So why work?
Isn't the point to make these people uncomfortable SO THEY WANNA WORK. No under Obama and Strickland we give bums all the "free rides" they want.

In other news, congress has just passed a free, prepaid car insurance plan to pay for car insurance for people who are already pre-qualified through their SafeLink plan. This free insurance plan pays for accidents caused by people talking on their SafeLink cell phones while driving and is paid for through an insurance surcharge paid by those people who are actually responsible enough to purchase their own auto insurance.
Would be funny, except I'm afraid it may all too soon be true.

Well, some of them abuse them yes, but some of them no. Also, this is the same program paid out of our phone bills under universal access. Some of those recipients are grandma on LIFELINE with a fixed line or Grandma can have a cell instead. Where do you draw the line? It is not costing the taxpayer anymore, in fact, the safelink phone my grandma has IS bare bones. Heck the criminals can afford to buy airtime, so that really doesn't wash neither.
So put grandma on your plan. It would cost you, what? An extra 10 bucks a month.

Actually, the majority of the people who get these are retarded and retards have poor impulse control. I wouldn't mind if it were just normal welfare recipients or even lazy people, but providing crap like this to retards who have no business even having friends to call burns my butt. A better solution would be to institutionalize them and get them off our streets and out of our neighborhoods. I'm sick of subsidizing the mentally retarded.

Okay, fine, I've been convinced that a cell phone can be a necessity, but TEXTING? A free, subsidized cell phone should not be able to text-that's not a necessity- you can't text a job application (yet...)
I don't think they make cell phones that cannot text. It's like trying to find a 13" black and white TV.

True, but the texting doesn't have to be included in the plan.

thedispatchsucks, guess what these arent obamas, these were actually started by republicons a looooong time ago, was initially for home phones but was rewritten a while back due to land line carrier disagreements. but i would not expect any party liner to check for facts, i already know they just throw accusations out there to show their intelligence.

I am requesting more free minutes. I would like 125 extra minutes that will roll over if unused.

I cannot beieve what a bunch of idiots you guys are!!! You haven't a heart nor a brain!! These phones are not for deadbeat losers they are for those who are honestly disabled and very poor. They do not have home phones because they cannot afford them. This is a true Godsend for the elderly and disabled! Don't they deserve to be able to call 911 for help if they should need it?! Get off your damn high horses and grow a brain!!! Obama had ZERO to do with this to the idiot above! These phones were in use before he was even running for office!! See how you guys are spouting off about something you know ZERO about and proving how stupid YOU ARE!! And the people who use this service did NOT ask for more minutes!! Stop reading stupid spam emails and listening to a bunch of nuts about something you won't even take the time to investigate for yourselves before you believe it! What a bunch of naive idiots you are!!!!!

All of you complaining about how the poor arenn't getting enough don't realize how much your corporate bigwigs keep sucking at the public teet...read up on how many billions that corporations have raked in over the last couple of decades and you'll find out that giving a poor person a few minutes on a phone doesn't compare...you right wingers are PURE hypocrites!

The entitlement class now demands 250 minutes paid for by everybody else.

The wife and I share a Tracfone - we paid $107 a year for 1,000 minutes - that is $9 a month averaged over 12 months.

Give up a pack of cigs, and a six of Milwaukee's Best every month, and you have your phone.

Thank you Ohio Poverty Law Center and Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. With all the crime in Columbus a cell phone is a necessity since landlines will soon be obsolete. Just going outside your home anymore can put you in harm's way. It is just nice to know that there are good organizations out there that are helping the unfortunate who cannot get jobs and are on a fixed income. It's an embarrassment that there are so many begrudging individuals that post to the comments section. Maybe they will need extra assistance some day.
Cell phones should NOT be subsidized by us the taxpayers they are NOT a "necessity". Meanwhile other people are paying.

First of all: There are programs to provide free home phones to the poor..
Second of all: 250 minutes = 4 hours..FOUR HOURS....That seems to me to be an awful lot of "emergency" calls a month
