Let's see 330,000 Km the injector cups need to be replaced. The old ones are brass and copper, the new ones stainless. Volvo installed an inferior product and has since updated it. They won't do a recall. Basically Volvo hopes you run out of warranty before they need to be changed.

Complete software overhaul within the first 6 months.

EGR valve replace 14 months. Sounds like a shotgun when it goes. It's un mistakeable.

Like the truck, fuel mileage, ride when it's not in the shop. Get use to hearing that.

I drove one and I was always having to slide axles to legalize loads. They're heavy on the steering axle,(which also gives a great ride,) so really heavy loads tend to be a problem..also after a few miles, the dash starts vibrating. I even took all the pieces loose, spread a bead of silicone around the groove and smoothed it out with my finger creating a silicone gasket. Let it dry and put it back together and it still vibrated! Never could get rid of the vibration in the dash as long as I drove that thing. They do have their bennies, They handle great and have a smooth ride (due to the heavy front end),and noise level inside is low. Driver comfort is high with nice seats, controls all laid out in a console for ease of reach and visual access. I had a very nicely specked out sleeper,,plenty of storage for personal items such as clothes as well as necessary things like the groceries, coffeepot, TV, microwave and mini fridge I never leave home without!
I have always preferred a Freightliner,,my favorite being an XL Classic I drove. But even they some times have a glitch. I once had a Columbia and the gauges were all in front of the steering wheel and small in size, making it hard for me to see them. My husband, however, who is taller than I am, had no problem with it. So I guess it all comes down to whats important to you and what kind of loads you are going to be hauling.

last January I purchased a new 2011 Volvo and it is probably one of the worse mistakes that I have ever made. Been farming and trucking for over 30 years and never have I ever experienced breakdowns like I'm experiencing with this new truck. 20 times in the shop, towed 3 times, 18 weeks loss revenue since January 2011...it just won't stop.
In hindsight I should have fixed up and kept my old truck.

I have a 2011volvo vn with the d13. So far it has 18,500 miles with only a recall to check injector torque. I was told by a mechanic at the dealer that they are having turbo trouble with idling with low old pressure and the exhaust brake loading the turbo to keep heat in the engine? He told me to raise the rpm at idle. I thinks this doesn't help with any fuel savings but I don't idle much.

at 90,000klms with motor so far no problems biggest problem to be honest with new equipment is the cost of the Def fluid and the mark up on it. seeing prices from 13.00-38.00 any one know the shelf life of the fluid?

working on D13 at work right now. Have had several trucks in recently with main idler gear on rear gear train coming loose and causing major damage. At least 1 week truck down. If not covered under warranty will be very costly. All truck that i have seen with this issue have been around 300000km. also power steering service program, tandem pump requires new valve.free but inconvienent. Injector cups are common problem. Injector harnesses are not as common on d16 but time consumming. If you have i shift trans relatively common to have vibrations on highway around 110. Flywheel will seperate at centre section. No major damage but once again a major inconvience.

Stay away from Volvo, unless you have a lot of money for maintenance and even more money for down time.

A big plus 1. I have a 2008 d13 with 820k miles. I put 1000 dolars in the last month alone on it. We run team and we can't keep up with the repait bills. So far we went through 4 turbo actuators, 6 flexible pipes, two egr coolers, four sets of injector caps, the dpf filter is monster pain in the a.. right now i'm in a truck stop with most likely the fifth turbo actuator down.
Don't get a volvo! Ever! It WILL bancrupt you!

Sorry, I made a mistake. It was 10.000 dolars the last month bills not 1000!

Don't even think about!
Honestly, i'm writting this from a motel Sikeston,Mo,my truck was towed here 3 days ago,Volvo is soo bussy they didn;t touch it yet.
I'm on the brink of banckrupcy, i have work good contract, well paid ,but this incompetent Volvo mechanichs don't know what's wrong with it.I spent 4 of past 6 weeks in shop for same problem, spent 16,000$ in towing repais and the truck is dieing ,lossing power,REGEN NEEDED,emission ,EGR,DPF,related.
I replaced manifold,all 6 injectors,cleaned DPF,all nox,dif.presure sensors,turbo acuator,replaced all wiring, still same problem.
It's my 2nd Volvo truck, but i'll never buy a Volvo again. I used to own a Volvo770/2001,Detroit D60, was ok, i could find a Freightlinear Dealer anywhere open 24/7 working on D60.
I did trade it in 2008 for a new Volvo780,D13 motor/134,000$. The problem with this one is i have to take it to Volvo for engine problems and VOLVO provides the worst truck repair services;expenssive, poor parts supply, shops are working like pregnant ladies 8-10 hours/day Monday to Friday, poor qualified mechanichs not trained for new models. The DPF,emission on my truck keept me in shop about 4-5weeks/year since 2008, towing, hotels, loads abandoned, clients lost.
Get a used truck without EGR/DPF/DEF!

not just the vovlvo trucks that are having problems,i have a western star last year 6 egr 5 turbos, not the trucks,90 per cent is the nasty products people are making,no care in manufacturing anymore throw it together so i can get my check all they look at,plus all the pollution crap they want to strangle the motor with doesnt help either,so it isnt just vovlvo trucks it is all of them. plus now most of the mechanice just guess, put this part on put that part on,seems alot dont know how to read the computers, guess they missed that day in school.

Thats what ive seen since working for volvo. Other than that i like the trucks ride super smooth to me its the Cadillacs of trucks. Id look into a cummings isx heard good things out of them!

Yes the bull gears are/were a problem. If you order a truck now the bull gear has already been updated. The vendor that made the bull gear for volvo did not take into account the two different metals expanding at different rates which allows the pressed on bearing to back off. Also the guy who said he had to have all of his software reprogrammed is incorrect. There is a service program to reprogram the ecm and the acm but this is at no cost and the ecm update only changes the running engine oil temp to reduce the likely hood of the bull gear seperating. There is no current recall for the bull gear but it is coming and will involve over 20000 units. If it takes a week to replace the bull gear then you are at the wrong repair facility. It only takes two days at most and a competent tech can replace it in a day. I have done at least a dozen. As far as dpf egr def and any other emissions related issues they all have the problem 60 ser egr engines are bad about losing #6cylinder due to sooting cummins is bad about egr turbo egr coolers piston coolers and wrist pin bushings that will leave your engine with a rod hanging out of the block. So yes they all have problems thank uncle sam for most of them.
