I have Two d16 volvo's one is a 2007 Vt800 D16 550 HP I have had a new head installed (valve problems) and 5 turbo chargers in two years and 365,000 km's
The second is a 2008 Vt830 that is eight months old and has 145,000 km's and I have just had my seventh turbo installed. also the low coolant is always on and the retarter overspeed sensor is always coding every hour. What else would you like to know. I am not impressed. Only good point the Vt800 550HP gets 5.5 imp MPG pulling 5 axle super B's gross weight 62,500 KG's and the Vt830 with the 600HP gets close to 6 imp MPG pulling same loads.

I've had every imaginable problem with my 07. Right now it is Sunday
Night 10:00 pm and my radiator just blew again for the second time.
I'm done with this piece of garbage that I paid 125,000 us.
There has been problems every month. Anything from injectors, turbos, radiators, oil coolers,to paint problems. I just got quoted 1200. For a tow bill, I don't know where I'm going to get the money from. This truck has gotten me bankrupt. So I'm typing this in hopes that someone will read it and think before buying this product. Good luck and god bless.

The Volvo D16 and Cummins ISX both use the same turbos (Holset), the only difference is the electrical connector. I believe Holset is working on building a better replacement to cure this issue. Volvo also has updated injector hold downs to help cure the injector cup issues. Darryl was right on the fix for the coolant issue, you plug the air going to the surge tank and this will cure the issue of it using coolant. If you are looking for a D16 I would suggest getting it in a VT instead of a VN because they just cramed that engine in the VN. In order to get the valve cover off, you have to remove the doghouse, but in order to get at the top bolts for the doghouse you have to remove the brake ECM, you then have to remove a few dash panels for the doghouse to clear and pull the carpet back, then in order to pull it all the way back and out of the way, you have to pull the shifter and move it out of the way. It doesn't stop there, you still won't be able to get the valve cover off, you'll have to remove the cab bolt on the drivers side and lift the cab up around 6" so the valve cover can clear the rear gear-train. It's a real PITA and takes around 4 times longer to get the valve cover off compared to a VT where you just unbolt and lift off. The engine was intended for a cabover design like in Europe. Also it's hard to compare the D16 to an older mechanical engine because they don't have all the extra crap on them. You need to compare the same year of engines, where as Cat, Cummins, and Detroit are having their own problems.

I have an 07 780 with D-16. The engine is on it's 3rd turbo. I had to pay $5000 for the third turbo even though it was replaced as a part of a recall less than a year prior. I dont have any more coolant issues after recall work on cooling system. Lately fuel economy is down to 5.5mpg from 6.5 and this engine needs a gallon of oil every 1000 miles. I just had overhead done too! I am very disatisfied with this engine and would not recommend buying one. I have been to multiple Volvo/Mack shops and find them to be incompetent, slow and dishonest. I would like to join any class action lawsuits concerning this engine.

I want to join a class action as well. 3 turbos, injector cups twice, cooling light still on, egr components to many times to list, and now back in the shop for low oil pressure and high crankcase pressure. If anyone is using 1 gallon of oil for every 1,000 and has blue smoke, take your oil fill cap off and see if you have smoke coming from your oil fill, if you do have them check your crankcase pressure.
FOR ANYONE WANTING TO DO A CLASS ACTION I HAVE PLENTY OF REPAIR ORDERS AND WOULD LOVE TO GET ON BOARD!!!!!!!! My e-mail is [email protected]

Lena, I have a d-16 equipped volvo and might pursue legal action. I would like to know how your case is progressing. I live in the US so I dont think I can join your suit, however I would like to know how your case is developing. Good luck, I hope you get the compensation you rightfully deserve. Robert Griffin.
