rk lee..i would suggest you get the truck on a dyno.the problem i had was from factory.if it dyno`s less than 80% of advertised hp then your injectors are likely to be the problem.i used d16 back in europe, these are good motors when there running right.good luck to all all the above

well Les....make the most of your little cat.Cat did such a lousy job making a decent 07 motor they just announced they will cease production in 2010.This is a site titled "D16 PROBLEMS",this might have something to do with the comments above.ps all motors have a fuel pump...not just little cats

LOL obviously you've never seen a real fuel pump, just one of those little ones you can hold in your hand?

My point being that I'm glad I don't have a computerized motor. Since you didn't get that that just tells me you've probably never seen or driven a truck without a computer on it. Next time I'll explain myself alittle better so you younger drivers can understand...LOL.

As for Cat in 2010, can you blame them? With all this emissions crap. It's funny these newer trucks are suposed to be cleaner burning but yet they use more fuel then my older truck. Doesn't make any sense!

<quoted text> Any luck resolving your fuel mpg? having the same problem. Truck was getting 6.5 then dropped off to 4.5-5.3?
The truck is now getting about 5.8 at 75mph if you try to go slower the mpg drops/ but the driver just totaled it at the AZ/CA line on the night of the 3rd

2 weeks now with the D 16. So far so good. Burning less fuel than my C 15 cat that I had in my old truck. I do alot of fluid transfer work , so a MPG figure is not what I monitor. Only total fuel consumption per week. Down 100 liters per week . Pulls ok. Smooth. Keep you posted.

i bought a 780 with d16 in 07 and have put 213000 miles year to date,my fuel mileage is at 7.3 on light loads and 6.7 on heavy loads but i drive it at 62mph.I have replaced 2 turbos, injector cups at 40000 miles and recently cooper sleeves injectors.
Mass air flow sensor, humidity sensor. My advise to d16 owners if you want good fuel mileage slow down to 62 or slower,i certainly did and gained 1 mpg my fuel average is over 7mpg.

if anyone has had issues with a volvo d16 engine please email me at [email protected] I am collecting information to make a suit thanks.
I have had 4 turbochargers, 3 relative humidty sensors, 4 steering boxes (power steering still moans), 3 air leveler valves for rear the suspension, replace main air line to compressor 3 times and the list goes. This all took place within the 1st year on my 2008 vn780. Think the dealer could fix anything the first time.

14000 miles on a D 16. Engine runs well. Average fuel milage for 120 000 lb GVW. Loses 1 gal of antifreeze a week. they say due to Regen systm creating extra heat while cycling. Answer is to disconnect supply of air to coolent system. Air compresed air is put in cooling system to increase cooling capability. So net result is less cooling capacity to avoid losing coolant. Not sure thats a good solution. Also . while Regeneration of exhaust is in progress, hot raw fuel fumes began to billow out from under cab. To dealer Mon coming for repairs. Cracked flex line at exhaust manifold likely cause. Both above concerns are recognized as issues for the D 16 with the Particulate filter Regen system and as yet have no permanent repair for either. My truck is a 2009 630.

I have Two d16 volvo's one is a 2007 Vt800 D16 550 HP I have had a new head installed (valve problems) and 5 turbo chargers in two years and 365,000 km's
The second is a 2008 Vt830 that is eight months old and has 145,000 km's and I have just had my seventh turbo installed. also the low coolant is always on and the retarter overspeed sensor is always coding every hour. What else would you like to know. I am not impressed. Only good point the Vt800 550HP gets 5.5 imp MPG pulling 5 axle super B's gross weight 62,500 KG's and the Vt830 with the 600HP gets close to 6 imp MPG pulling same loads.

all of you shut up because Volvo engines are the best
Volvo engines are nowhere near the best. out of a combined 75 trucks i maintain for a fleet the Volvo is one of the most expensive to maintain and repair in the event of a breakdown, Although they do post some fuel mileage numbers about.3 mpg better than my Cat Products.

Hey Darryl get your shop to do the fix that is designed for the D13's they put a small ball in line for the overflow of the coolant tank it stops the tank from expelling the coolant. They tested this as they do with the 13's ( a small bottle on the overflow line) and I was filling it. Now with the fix I have no coolant loss.
Hope this helps.
