Now at hotels: The $250 cigarette
“Would you like me to take a polygraph to prove to you that I am not a liar?”
Dan Cole checked out of his Connecticut hotel early on a Saturday morning last month and found an unwelcome surprise. via Denver Post

If a vacation from home means being spied on, the purpose of the vacation dies. Perhaps these guests can counter by spying on the cleaning staff. Recently, one of the news magazines did a segment on poor cleaning practices in hotels. Why not bring your own spy camera with you on that next vacation and sue their as*** when you catch their cleaning staff using poor hygiene?

If you pay cash how will they get their money.? You dont have to deal with the front desk upon departure.

Advocating "physical harm" now? |

non-smokers are getting more sensitive to the smoke? How can this be?

i would think if the fines have gone down it's probably because the smokers have chosen not to stay there anymore.

"Mr. Cole is a smoker but insists he didn't light up in the room. He got busted, he thinks, for throwing a few cigarette butts he had stowed in his pants pocket into the room's trash."
Wow! What a considerate smoker! Rather than just throw his butts on the ground, he puts them in his pocket for later disposal. Does anyone really believe that? |

If there are no ash trays, I always put them in my pocket. I would think that you would appreciate this attempt to stop littering, but instead you throw more insults. |
I have never personally observed a smoker putting a cigarette butt in their pocket for later disposal. I salute you and BD for being such courteous smokers. |

How many smokers have you attempted to observe doing anything but smoking? My guess would be Zilch. |
I've observed many that toss their butts on the ground or out their car window. If you go to any parking lot, you will see piles of butts where someone has emptied their ash trays. Many smokers dispose of their butts with no regard for others. |

But the non smokers accept no responsiblity for the fast food trash litter along all the roadways ? Fasinating.! I know this was part of the agenda of the ACS. Its on their web site, and wasnt mentioned until it was posted, imagine that uh ? |

I think they are jerks, too. I just see a lot more smokers littering with their butts... |

It really does not matter what I believe. I would like to say that it is a plausable story. I used to put butts in my pocket when there was no convenient place to dispose of them and put them in a garbage can when I found one. I no longer smoke, so it is not an issue with me. The hotel refunded his money. They did send him a message that was loud and clear, though, that they do not want smoking in their rooms. He helped them spread that message by getting into the news. What I will say is that when I, as a non smoker, go into a non smoking room and smell smoke, I do complain. I complain to the on duty management at the hotel and then I complain to the home office during regular business hours followed up by snail mail to the proper executives. On more than one occasion I have been comped for the price of the room in addition to getting a room that does not smell like smoke. This all comes at an additional cost to the hotel. For those smokers who have not been following the news in the hotel industry, what I do is par for the course. That is why more and more hotels are going 100% smoke free and why they are fining guests who violate the rules. Non smokers have found that we have clout. Lots of it and we are exercising it to make the world a cleaner, smoke free place. |

The problem here is that smokers, as a group, seem to think that it is okay to litter with smoking related materials. They bring up other litter besides cigarette butts when smoking related litter is pointed out to them (What about fast food litter, OR they should enforce the laws that they already have). The idea that 100% of the smoking related litter is caused by smokers somehow eludes them. If we eliminate smoking, we eliminate smoking related litter. It is plain and simple. As far as the other litter, many states have imposed a deposit of drink containers and this has reduced the amount of litter in those states. Many fast food chains have eliminated styrofoam as a packaging material, opting instead for something that breaks back down into the environment quickly. As far as the smoking litter, the next time you smokers go to the grocery store, look at the ground as you walk from your car to the store. The parking lot is littered with butts. This is from people coming from their cars, where they ostensibly had some place to dispose of their butts and going to the store which has large ashtrays in front of the doors. Yet despite the ability to properly dispose of the butts, many smokers simply CHOOSE to litter. Sorry, but those butts do NOT win any friends among non smokers. Those butts, plain and simple are the reason for more and more outdoor bans such as the one proposed for CA parks. |
OK, maybe it's a case of a few bad apples making it tough for everyone else. To any other considerate smokers --- keep up the good work! |
|
Sure some do. I don't know if it's many. I know people who throw their bags, drink cups and all out the window after going through a fast food drive through. I know people who drink beer and one by one sling their cans(or bottles) out along side the road. I have seen people dump a whole garbage bag along side the road. You can always find something to gripe about if you want to gripe. Right now it's smoking. Smokers are not the cause of everything gone wrong. You don't have to smoke! Chill. |
