Now that it is promising to be a "hotel", not an "inn" - then naming it the Dream Hotel seems most fitting. I just hope they can successfully improve the looks of the tacky block building.

Tear it down and start over...as for the opposition...tell them we need to increase their property tax 50% if they oppose its reconstruction.

Has it come down to this? You can't even change the name of the place without input from those who have nothing at stake. Henry is right on. The only way I see anything happening at the site is if they take on Barry Swenson as a partner. I like Vista del Mar, but only the owners have the right to name the place. What's next? Starbucks doesn't sound Santa Cruz.

How about Rio Dream Inn or Rio Inn

It can be "named" anything you want, but we will call it the DREAM IN. Tissues are known as Kleenix and believe it or not refrigeraters are still Frigidaires to many people. We refer to going for a soda as getting a COKE even if it is a Pepsi or 7 Up. The DREAM INN is the DREAM INN. I spent many an exciting night at the DREAM INN and when you rename it, will I have really "stayed there?" I suggest the "Santa Cruz Dream Inn " and then we can still suck our thumbs and have our way.

Ah....the name thing continues eh? I've been in Santa Cruz since 1997 (not too long compared to many other residents here) but even I call it Dream Inn which is what I knew it as. Indeed, I think the building is ugly and unfortunate that such an ugly building has to face the beautiful ocean. I don't know what the restrictions were but it would have been nice to tear down the building and build another building of about the same capacity. Maybe that would placate some of the resistance.
The name change is a good thing. And how about a re-dressing up of the front and back facade of the hotel as opposed to rebuilding the whole thing? It is, right now, an ugly cinder block that looks like government public housing--apartment flat style. I used to live in such kind of public housing.

After reading the comments, how about naming is "California Dream'Inn" ;-) Hahaha.
I'm not so sure I like "Dream Hotel" because if you say it with moderate speed, it sounds like "Dream Motel" which, well, conjures up roadside motels. Definitely don't like "Dream Hotel" as a name.

I lived in Santa Cruz when the Dream Inn was built. It should stay the Drean Inn,nothing else would fit. Calling it anythig else is just plain STUPID!!!

I was part of the original opening crew of the original DREAM INN. I think the name is still great and I am sure it needs remodeled or done completely over. What's wrong with DREAM INN? It was "The Place" in it's day.

I prefer "Dream Inn," although with rooms going for upwards of $200/night, a better name might be "Rich People's Palace."

A colorful, catchy, easy to remember name is the "Dream Inn"! Is, was and always will be the Dream Inn to me.(no matter what kind of new face they put on her) Celebrated many fun times in the old hotel...

Why not Santa Cruz Dream Inn? Or Santa Cruz Dream Hotel?

I think it should be called 'Marriott". I like rewards when i pay that much for a room.

I always think of it as the Dream Inn. Coast Hotel is not very catchy. If they want to tear it down and rebuild it, they have my support. I can't wait until they tear down the La Bahia hotel and rebuild that. Santa Cruz should take advantage of its status as a tourist destination. Not all cities are lucky enough to enjoy the economic benefits of tourism.

Please re name it the Dream Inn. There's no way the new owner would go wrong with the right name!

Right on, Brigid! Upwards of $200 a night is lunacy! Spending that kinda $$ for a night in a small-town multi-story hotel w/ lousy parking, is more bucks than brains.

The absence of the convention component renders this remodel a waste of time and money. The fuzzy thinking fanatics who managed to swing the reactionary vote against the previous re-do of this facility can now celebrate our city being bankrupt and lacking any long-term tax base. Our local economy is taking a nose dive without any means to support basic services. THANK YOU! HURRAY for the trailer court residents who faced potential shade on their property, the outrage! Those who shot it down, well done. Now, I ask these great minds to explain how we can fund our isolated pocket of enlightenment?

Well, me and my friend made up a song in High School about Prom night... "You take a virgin... to the Dream Inn... " Ahhhh good memories. It will always be the Dream Inn to me... I hope they bring back it back to life.

Just glancing again at the comments on leaving the name as it was, DREAM IN. Sounds to me that is what the public really wants. Yes the parking was the pits. Nothing is going to change that unless they build it on top if a big garage and then that will be ugly. Everything in Santa Cruz has changed and not all for the good. Why change a perfectly good name. Sounds elagant enough for me but then I am just a little old country gal raised in Santa Cruz. The real Santa Cruz. You won't change it's name will you?
