I am not a fan of smoking anymore since my heart attack, but I am a big fan of a free society. People having choices to buy what they want in a store or over the internet. More and more we are living in a socialist society because of idiots like Blumenthal telling us through laws what we can wear, eat, say, do, buy, etc, etc,. This is all part of your democratic control over government and their position that you cant run your own life, government needs to run it for you. Vote for REAL change people. GET RID OF THE DEMOCRATS, AND ANY REPUBLICAN THAT VOTES WITH DEMOCRATS.

Is this a news item or an opinion piece?
"In his latest crusade ... "
"Although $650,000 [lobbying expenses of UST] may seem large, it represents only a small fraction of special interest lobbying."
etc.
Please put your op-eds where they belong--on the opinion pages.

I gave up smoking two years ago but people are going to start mugging people for a cigarette up there if the prices go any higher. Here a pack is $2.50 but they are now putting an increase of a 50 cent tax on each pack.

It's all about collecting the tax, not underage buyers.

Dick should be suing the legislature and the Governor for stealing the tobacco settlement money. New York and New Jersey have excellent education and even free treatments to quit smoking from this money. Connecticut just pissed it away like usual.

The state should use most of the taxes from cigarettes for education.

Connecticut tobacco farms grow the most highly prized Cigar wrapper leaf in the industry, so I suppose this legislation will most certainly hurt these CT businesses if they will regulate selling tobacco (Cigars) through the mail.

So, who could be against the welfare or our children? No one.
But who could be against these phoney politricksters who try to hide their fascist agendas behind the wellbeing of children? Everyone, I hope.
Like the previous poster said, it's not about children, it's about the tax money.
What's more it's also about ever more restriction on our freedom to choose and enjoy - in this case a totally legal product.
He wants to ban tobacco from the mails so people can't evade cigarette taxes?
Why not ban cars too so people can't go out of state for cheaper smokes and then bring them home?
It gets rediculous, and this guy should be laughed out of the government.

AVA wrote: <quoted text>What a dumb response. It is the question of freedom! And what kind of education? If people turn out dumb like this response represent, all money what spent on education is waisted! Lottery, property taxes support education, but as I see the money must be misplaced, because there are very few educated humans out there! Grow food, instead of tobacco? Hey, you should know, that might be the tobacco farming is the only private farming in the US. The rest is corporate mass production, what kills you! More harmful, than smoking. Wake up man!

Freedom! Here is the question! No one should tell, where to buy, where to smoke, and where not to smoke! The US become a retarded kindergarten, where people brainwashed and controlled! Everything must be told, no one is able to think for them self! One suggest, that the money should be spent on education! If education get so far, that some even dare to suggest such a stupid thing to spend the money there, than this kind of education is hopeless, and already what ever spent on it is waisted! I say no more, because there are very few sensible individuals here, who still know what is freedom and independence means.

I agree with the statement Katherine made about feeling like in kindergarten. We just have too many laws because they are supposed to be good for us. I believe we all choose our evil, whether its smoking, overeating, drinking, etc. Do we really have to ban cell phones in a car? Whatever happened to personal responsibility? If you put hot coffee in a foam cup between your legs you will get burned. Those law suits should be thrown out. All they do is cost taxpayers money and people get away with saying "It's not my fault".

Since the postal service is bound to provide universal service, and made to ship a legal mailable commodity (cigarettes)UNLIKE Fedex, UPS and other private shippers who can choose their customers, then lets talk! Congress get it right, let the USPS operate like a business instead of one of your toys!
