Has anybody figured out why the fire department chooses to stand in the middle of the road and block traffic on the busiest day of the year, UVA move-in weekend? People are trying to get to where they need to be, and these bozos are in the way.

They have a God given right to always be in the middle of the road whether they're needed or not, most of the time not. In this case aking for momey to feed the million dollar boy toy they just got but didn't need.

Agreed. While I applaud their efforts to raise funds for charity, WHY did they have to pick one of the busiest intersections (Emmet/University/Ivy), on one of the busiest days, at one of the busiest times -- thus FURTHER tying up traffic?! It was already a mess, they further compounded the problem, and likely caused several fender-benders in the process!

Why are they allowed to ask for money at an intersection..and no panhandleing allowed. The government thinks they can pull off any scat they want to at our expense. This is just crazy.

Far as I can remember the Charlottesville Fire Department has done the MDA boot drive for many years around the same time. I"m sure if one of you or one of your children had MD you would appreciate what these guys are doing. Also during this busy time of year when UVA students are moving in there are more accidents and emergencies where the fire department is needed. There is a big difference between someone panhandling on the streets, I respect the firefighters for supporting MD and think they do a wonderful job!!!
are they on the clock

respect the firefighters, obama, or romney but dont interfere with the rest of us. I would rather have a panhandler begging for food, money or work at my window than an overpaid government worker on a fat pension and health care benefits with their hands or "boot" out at my window. Are they on the clock? If so that makes it much worse? What if they they get their foot run over by my care...do the cops come and charge me and then I get charged through my taxes for a workers comp injury?

I think peope in this town are so dumb, they always have something to rant about. If you don't like what the fire department is doing then don't support it and when you are in need of there services don't call them!!

I guess you can live anywhere and be effected by the government overreaching and causing trouble..It seems that most posters agree and to be frank I am surprised, but happy about it. I think they have alot of nerve to reach out to an overburdened public whil they are over staff and over paid. Like I said before, I would like to know if they are doing this "on the clock" if not then congratulations to them.
