Facebook, Florida agree on new Internet safeguards

The reason Facebook became so successful in the first place is because people were freely able to network on it. Imposing restrictions and forcing people to comply with some of these so-called "safety" rules will change the site into something else---and it will only be a while before people begin drifting away to other networking sites.
Facebook reminds me a lot of AOLback in the 1990s. Hot and happening. Now AOL can't give its services away for free. |

I still don't see how it's the responsibility of the service to protect it's users. It's not TV's responsibility to protect it's viewers. It's not radio's responsibility to protect it's listeners. It's individuals responsibilities - yes, even children.

nuh ugh I know he did not get democrats and socialism the blame. They provide for their kids unlike the republicans who send everyone to boarding schools to thereby remain clueless. And then take out their aggression on underage kids like daddy do.

It should not be the place of internet providers to do the job of a parent. I can see setting guidelines, but ultimately it is the parent who should control where the kid goes on the net and what he/she can do and see.
Here is what can be done to help ease concerns; why don't these sites impose a parental control panel, mom and dad have their own login to the profile which invokes a control panel. Profiles that the parent believes to be harmful, bad influence etc can be banned by the parent. Likewise in this control panel the parent can set parameters for who the child can communicate with such as: age range etc. The kid has no access to this control panel. The bottom line here is the solution to the problems kids face on the net have to be approached not only by the provider but also with the cooperation of the parents. It should never be assumed that any internet provider or social networking provider is to be solely responsible for online safety of children, you are the parent they are not, you control your child's environment, they do not have to. |
