This so-called "mom" has some serious issues of her own. She needs prison style counseling and should never be released of the crime she has committed. Society has a hard enough time trying to take care of and control our own hormonal teenagers. We don't need adults adding to the disparity!

I am so glad she is being charged; I could not believe that a mother would do something like this to a child. As a mother and a grandmother, I tend to feel very protective over all children, not just my own. Her level of cruelty and immaturity is beyond my comprehension; I hope she is prosecuted to the fullest extent!

Wow - while I agree that this adult should never have gotten herself mixed up in teenage drama, to say she was responsible for this girl's suicide is a bit much.
The girls mother admitted she struggled with self esteem issues and depression since childhood. Was she on meds? Was she taking them? Why not to both questions if the answer is no.
Second - would most teenage girls react in this manner - NO, they would not. So clearly something was up with this girl.
You have to ask yourself how she can be so in love with a boy she met on line and had been talking to for just 4 weeks. I mean usually when girls commit suicide over a boy, the've had sex. These two hadn't even kissed.
Granted - the woman involved was wrong, but this child was not normal to beginwith. You might have to prove this woman knew this girl had issues to have a successful case.

I wish you drama queens would get over it. If there was a failure it was by the parents of the dead girl.
It could have been ANYONE who lead her on like that.
What's amusing is the indictment, 4 counts of violating TOS of MySpace?! Is that a federal statute?
Federal investigators should spend their time and taxpayer money on prosecuting ID theives versus given them a slap on the wrist. Not waste time on internet romance gone awry!
Dumb story, dumber people.

This indictment is total crap and evidence of a police state. Some unstable girl goes and hangs herself due to some cruel words. Now, based on some creative interpretation of a federal law, an indictment has been issued.
Let's start charging prosecutors and police with a crime if they should do something hurtful that causes someone to commit suicide. Matter of fact let's do the same for media reports and especially nasty internet postings.

Obviously this girl was very unstable. But you know what, when you tell a young girl that's in love that the world would be a better place without her, you're just asking for it.
You're not trying to push this girl to suicide, but you're creating the possibility that it will happen. Just an incredibly careless thing to do.
I'm seeing some really unintelligent postings in here blaming only the girl, and that's just really cold. The first thing you should think of, is "What if it happened to my daughter?" I'm guessing your answer wouldn't be "Well, she was unstable and she was gonna do it anyway duh huh".
The worst thing that will happen to this lady is second-degree manslaughter or something and out of jail in a few years, when she really deserves to be on the wrong end of a shotgun blast.

I hope Lori Drew can own up to what she has done and accept the consequences for her actions. She is a murderer and I hope she gets her just desserts. She doesn't derserve to walk free, let alone live for doing this to another human being, let along a child.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Thirty years should give her plenty of time to figure out what she did was wrong. What the H E L L was she thinking of? It was not what was best. Hang'em your Honor. They took a life and should lose theirs!

It is quite comical to read the comments from readers regarding the proper punishment for Lori Drew: she should serve decades in jail, she should hang, she should be blasted with a shotgun. It's good that people are creating novel solutions to the menace of Lori Drew.
This is a political prosecution and no crime has been committed. Lori Drew is scarcely the only person on the internet to have made some vicious comment about somebody else. The federal prosecutor doesn't like her so he's conjured up this indictment through his curious interpretation of a law. This all smacks of tyranny.

An adult fraudulently used computers to obtain information about a child of thirteen. She then mis-used this information to stalk, harass and cause emotional distress to this child. These actions are despicable. Like any other child abuser, Lori Drew should be prosecuted and do prison time if found guilty.

Drew is an adult who baited an emotionally unstable girl with false hopes in order to mess with her mind. Just an evil bitch who wouldn't own up to the damage she caused. Hope she meets some nice girlfriends in prison to show her how messing with someone is REALLY done. So Stan, what's up in Thailand? Business trip? You wouldn't be up to anything shady would you? It seems like you don't like the authorities keeping tabs on people. Be a good boy now.

As I understand it, the young lady was communicating with Lori Drew who was using the persona of a teen named "Josh". Lori's alias said cruel things to the girl and she killed herself. That girl would have been equally dead if "Josh" had turned out to be real. She would have been equally dead if she had committed suicide after being dumped by a real-life (not internet) relation. None of the other possibilities would have resulted in anyone being prosecuted but Lori Drew gets indicted because of some vague law with a totally different purpose. First off, we're not on a first name basis. I'm not in the habit of giving personal details in a public forum - especially to somebody unwilling to state his/her name. Nor would I trust someone who gives vent to Lesbian gang-rape fantasies

I'd hate to see you fall victim to some vague law there in Thailand seeing how you have a soft spot in your heart for children.

Come on guys, 1 poll, 1 topic. We have 5 running here. I am half way around the world, opened my laptop today and saw this childs face again on the front page. My heart dropped. When does she get some peace? When do we let her family off the hook? Procecute to the fullest extent of the law but stop the sensationalism. Its a very sad and difficult situation.

Adults/parents need to be protectors and role models to their children. This woman acting as a teen is despicable. Yes, the young girl must have had issues to have killed herself over an online boy, but if this woman does not pay for her stupidity, what kind of message would we be sending to all of the others that think that this behavior is acceptable? I'm glad they were able to charge her here in LA, and hope they send her away for a long, long time.

I'm glad they were able to charge her here in LA, and hope they send her away for a long, long time. The correct message is that not all nasty behavior is a matter for the courts. People have been cruelly treated by police and judges and some commit suicide as a result. People get dumped by their girlfriends or boyfriends every day and a few commit suicide. I suppose more than a few dead children have been told by their parents that they regret having given birth to them. We are not going to criminalize those vicious statements - except when Lori Drew is involved. The message that's being sent is that you go to jail if you are unpopular.
