Bravo for taking the initiative and stating somewhere to make sure kids understand the dangers of the internet. Why only 10-12 year olds though?
If the district is soo worried to have an assembly about this, how about sharing information with the parents also. There are sites out there where parents can download programs that will keep track of their childs movement on the internet and send them a report by email, most parents don't know about them and even more wouldn't know how to download it or what to do with it. Why not educate the parents too? Instead of the fluff filled glossy magazines the district sends to all tax payers homes, send something with that kind of information in it. ALL taxpyers can benefit from it-grandpa and grandma have computers too! Those without a computer can become educated about it anyway and then pass it along to someone who would better need the information. And before people jump on the 'its not the districts job to do this for parents' bandwagon. Remember, the school districts main priority is education....and education doesn't stop when you leave 12th grade. Its an ongoing process for the rest of your life. |

I agree. My daughter came home from school yesterday with NO information for us. And when she recounted the assembly, all she could really remember was the silly cat that "hosted" the video they watched. I think 4th and 5th graders are more than mature enough...especially these days...to be educated in a more mature format. A silly cat is not going to do it.
My husband and I try to be proactive in monitoring her internet time, but there are still sites that my daughter downloads without our knowledge...mostly child-friendly sites, but that does not mean she can't download inappropriate content disguised as something more innocent. I would like to know more about ways in which we can better monitor her activities online. Many of her friends have personal websites, and she has more than once asked us if she could have one as well. We have adamantly told her NO, and tried to explain why. It's so hard these days to be a parent, especially when other parents allow their children to do whatever they want... |

The Attorney General's website has the information you are looking for. He should be applauded!

Where have you been? The district offered several internet classes last year. Why didn't you attend last year?

Where were these advertised? |

My son came home yesterday talking about the assembly and what had been discussed. By listening to him, I could tell he took all the information seriously. My son has questioned me about myspace but we have discussed it and he understands that its not for younger children, even more so after the assembly. He is on a different website where you don't post pictures, you are disguised as a penguin, and I received an email when he signed up telling me about the program and I had to give my permission for him to even belong to it and I have access to cancel it at anytime. I think it was a very informative assembly and Im glad he attended.

Big brother will be protecting all of you soon. John McSame recently tied international Internet sex slaves and sex slave rings to Al Qaeda and terrorism. The terrorist are profiting from this material and he wants to stop it. Today McCain's sidekick, Joe Lieberman, was whining about the terrorist web sites and their ability to disseminate information on bombs and other terrible things. Joe wants the Internet to eliminate these sites and control the available information. Next we will hear a follow up from that slithering snake from SC, Lindsay Graham. The Government now wants to control the information available to you on the internet. Their goal is to regulate and over see content, like on radio and TV. You will only have access to sites they approve. John McCain has already been in discussions with the telecom industry that wants more controls and profits. China's google already operates this way and they have no information from the outside world, only government appoved sites and content.

I was living upstate in a real school district where parents and children attend these kind of events together.... |
