Poll: Should An Employer Have My Facebook Password?

Full story: Patch.com

A "Ummm, my user name is my first name, and my password is, ummm....'liketoparty.'" It's embarrassing and intrusive moments like this - perhaps in a job interview, perhaps with a current employer - that local Senator Leland Yee has decided to address with proposed legislation.

Two words to answer the question of the title: "Hell no!"

If it's not public record then your employer has no right to it.

Having access to your Facebook could lead to discriminating against something the employee would keep quiet about such as their sexual orientation or religion or political party.

Where does an employer's rights end? Where do you draw the line? If it were too much of a hassle I'd just delete my Facebook account then there would be nothing for my employer to view. What privacy rights do we have and where do they start and end? Can the employer legally demand and fire me for not giving him access to my P.O. Box, email inbox, or inside my house?

I'm not on Facebook.

As far as should an employer have your password, I think it's a ridiculous question. Would you give an employer a key to your house or car ? The same thing applies.

ANY password should not be shared with ANYONE. Sharing a password or disclosing a password to anyone defeats the whole reason for having a password.
