Devens airport grounded before takeoff

MassDevelopment was approached recently by a company interested in providing airplane service at the former Moore Army Airfield, but officials quickly rejected the idea before a plane even left the hangar.

I would think the people of Ayer would love to have those planes and helicopters back along with the 1000s of soldiers and their paychecks.
Seems like another Mass town trying to insulate itself and then will cry poverty as they all do

re: original posting.
You bet. Ayer is very adept (maybe the best there is) at tapping into government programs and handouts. We don't need the baggage that an airport will bring.

I find it interesting that Jamie Eldridge is the key figure in this report. He can not be trusted (I'll reserve more graphic but appropriate language) but unfortunately he is the most capable politician there is at hoodwinking the public. I have to give him credit, he knows how to work an issue.

IMHO the best use of the airport is a wind farm. Up on the hill it should receive favorable wind currents while hidden from sight. Not that they are ugly. When I lived in California I would sit and watch the windmills in the hills for hours. They are a thing of beauty.

Well, when the casinos are built on Devens the airport will be very handy for the entertainers and 'Rich and Famous'.

Sometimes a plan just comes together.

I think they are dropping the ball by not building an airport there. Its along way from the interstates.

What better use for an airfield than an airfield ? Oh I should have given it more thought, they wouldn't have had to squander millions on some crooked contractor to build it, seeing that it already exists. They'll have to find some other way to funnel money to some state reps relatives who own contracting businesses.

To Eric, what's so wrong with a town wanting to insulate itself? Look around you at all the towns that have been so overdeveloped people are crawling all over each other and there isn't a moment's peace. I for one am glad they shot down the idea, I live just about a mile through the woods from the airfield and I like things the way they are right now, quiet. My husband and I moved to Shirley two years ago because it is still relatively quiet and not over developed. Let the executives drive to Hanscom or Manchester or Boston like everyone else.
