I did not see any mention of Islip - And I must say until you experience Islip, South of Montauk Hwy, you can not appreciate it. This is the greatest little town - I can walk to the beach (a great little beach with kiddie playground and concession stand) and I also can walk into the village to get my hair done or a pedicure or to catch a bite to eat or get birthday cards...nice stores with friendly owners that know you by name. So many historic homes - my is over 130 years old which we spent the last 7 years renovating and we could not be happier here, raising 3 small children - there are so many kids in the area and they are all always outside playing together on nice days - it is a great place to live and raise a family.

i have 2 kids in the lindenhurst school district and i am more than pleased with the school and the community as a whole. it is a very family oriented community, very centered on family activities. people that live here love it, and love the schools, but for some reason our reputation with surrounding towns doesn't measure up to the reality of life here.

Can you say correct punctuation?
I can safely assume that you did not attend one of the schools mentioned in this article. By the way, I am sorry that you do not live in a nice home.

The lists Greenlawn to be ahead of Northport. I have a hard time believing that. Half of Greenlawn is in the ghetto.

I have heard so many nice things about Central Islip too. You can get your hair braided, your teeth plated gold, and buy a 40oz all in the same store.

There is no school
system good enough anymore.

I home school.

New York school systems
are Nazi fiends to home
schoolers, but it's worth it.

However, We are looking into
moving to a more home school
friendly state, actually...to a family friendly state. No one has children in NY anymore!
You'd think we lived under the Chinese one child rule.

Lindenhurst is diverse?? I think you need to cross Strong Avenue once in a while and get a diversity lesson.

Good enough for whom?
If you give me your address, I'll send you some money to help you move out of our state. Go home school your future non-social child(ren) in another state and don't corrupt our moral majority.

Also, by the way.....by your statement above, you admit that you never had a child.

Whoever at Newday dreamed up this idea of rating the towns against each other has totally insulted the rest of Long Island.

If I didn't think my town was the best place on Long Island for my family I never would have moved here.

I really have to ask who picks a place to live because of "dog parks?"

If anyone else hinted that gays should live in the same area as other gays Newsday would jump all over them as suugesting segregation.

One thing I can see from Newsday's picks is that it's editors believe that one should pick a place to live to gain status. Well I have some news for Newsday's editors and that is "Money Can't Buy You a Good Home." It can buy you a house but it takes people, especially Mothers, to make a good home. SO WHEN CAN WE EXPECT NEWSDAY TO GIVE US A LIST OF LONG ISLAND PLACES WITH THE "BEST MOTHERS." Or should we simply assume the SUGGESTED best places to live has the best Mothers too.

Well, Newsday finally admits that diversity isn't all that desirable. The best schools on their list are couriously white! Bravo Newsday, it's about time you came around on that one!:)

Huntinghton, Greenlawn and Kings Park have their act together for special needs programs. I know this first hand. Good Luck.

Lake Ronkonkoma deserves a second look by house-hunters. What makes it a family-friendly place to live?
1. Sachem School District.(Have you seen test scores in today's Newsday 6/13/07?) WOW!
2. Recreation. Millions have recently been spent to revitalize Lake Ronkonkoma County Park. It's beautiful and more work is scheduled to be done. Come and take a look at the baby geese and ducks trailing their mothers all around the Lake! So cute!
3. Access to transportation. The LIE, railroad hub and McArthur Airport.
4. Shopping. Convenient to Smithhaven Mall.
5. Community groups. Check out the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization for one. They are an active group of community members committed to improvement.
Shhh...don't tell everyone. I like my little middle-class village the way it is! I am so thankful my husband and I chose this place almost 20 years ago to raise our family. And that when all our friends were "moving up" to "better" areas/school districts that we stayed put. I may not have the fanciest home, or the largest lot or even a waterfront view...but I can afford where I live and take my family on yearly vacations without going into debt (gotta love Southwest!). Lake Ronkonkoma has turned out to be our family's "American Dream." If everyone else felt the same way, it'd be way too crowded and expensive. So, we'll just keep this centrally located village our little secret...

Newsday is mandated to do these "feel good" stories. The real estate agents and their companies demand it, or they'll pull their advertising dollars. I was in the ad business some years ago, and believe it or not, every day presents a new "quid pro quo". It's got to be one of the sleaziest rackets on the planet.

the reason Newsday is running so many real estate stories is because they have lost HUGE numbers in their classified ads. it used to be the main place, along with the NYT, people would look for houses.

now everyone looks online.

idiotday didn't see this coming, despite the whole digital world predicting this, therefore they are only now trying to update their pathetic web site, which if you ever tried using it is pure torture.

on again Newsday misses the boat!

PS, don't even ask about the car ads, they get about 15 of those a week. lost that one to online also.

There are good kids in bad schools and bad kids in good schools. I think a lot has to to with the parents.
