I asked for TAA benefits through the labor office. They told me they would allow me training in any field that there was jobs in request for the service. You need to have five request and then go to the labor office and get your approval. This is a once in a life time education so don't blow it on just any school.( there are emergency fed funds for under $5000 job update training a person can request) No limit on how much school or time. You can request UI benefits and they will extend but you have to apply in the allotted time.

I got some funds and am now enrolled in Accounting program at Larry Selland College at Boise State. Much higher quality education and far lower cost than Henegar or Apollo. Be careful of those guys. No out of pocket costs but tuition for them is like 20,000 dollars vs what you can get at Selland for $4,000. Henegar and Apollo gave me lots of promises and would do all my paperwork - they don't tell you you will have student loans until the end of time. I know Selland is accepting applications now for Fall, 2008 and most programs only start once a year. Dental Assisting starts in the summer. I decided to do accounting because grads are getting hired at 35,000 - 40,000 with just 18 months of training - AAS degree. It's cool - more like detective work. Very little math - computer does it all. Just have to be detail oriented. Other high paying jobs that you guys might consider - computer network tech - diesel repair tech - I heard these guys make $50 -$70 after a couple years on the job the demand is so huge. Electronics techs are in high demand - to work on smart homes, medical equipment etc. I think Selland has 30 programs. Call them to get a booklet that describes all the programs. The faculty are great and most classes only have 20 people plus everything is hands on and you get lots of on the job training experience etc. I love it here. Lots of ex Micron folks are in our classes. Selland will moving to the new community college in Nampa at BSU West next summer - but will still offer lots of programs in Boise. Tuition will be about half the cost when it moves over ---- but don't wait too long - because I think the Department of Labor funds have to be used in a certain timeframe. Hope this helps. Best decision I ever made - to go back to school at 50. Having fun and learning that I am still marketable after all these years!

My husband worked in RDA for almost 21 years before he was let go 7/7/07 and is scheduled to start school this Fall. Department of Labor in Nampa has been very helpful throughout the process. TAA benefits will pay for his two-year program in IT & Computer Networking at Larry Selland College at BSU. His unemployment benefits have also been extended for the duration of schooling. BSU wanted him to take two classes to brush up on calculus and English 1 and at first Department of Labor was not sure the TAA would cover the cost of the classes but they came through and paid for those too. If I recall correctly there was a "cap" on the $$ amount TAA would pay for schooling but I cannot remember that figure. I agree with Electrician that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get an education. My husband gave so many years of loyal service to Micron to get booted out the way he did and I want him to get his education so that he can work where he will be valued. This is a scary time for us financially but his unemployment will pay for 2/3 of the mortgage payment and my wages will make up the rest. careerchanger wrote: I got some funds and am now enrolled in Accounting program at Larry Selland College at Boise State. Their loss would have probably been a cool billion, or even more, then.

Those IS people selected for outsourcing will begin being let go the end of April with a majority of them leaving the by the end of May. Why hasn't the news media jumped on this news? Micron isn't safe from this reporting. Where is the media coverage of this mass forced exodus?

Hey...if nothing else since being let go my take home pay has doubled and my current gig (with a much more reputable company) is with an insane profitable company....
I don't want to, but still do, harvest some resentment. We wanted to settle down in Boise and that dream was smashed by this whole mess...

Unfortunately Micron isn't really a big deal compared to the housing bust and the collapsing financial and credit markets. The story of Micron is also a retelling of the end of the garmant industry; the end of the steel industry; the end of the IT industry; etc... And remember that Katrina gave America "economic refugees" instead of "displaced Americans" so the writing on the wall is getting nastier and nastier folks!
