There is a more obvious answer to this then most are offering. We have a serious wealth redistribution problem in this country. Just like in a game of Monopoly, the end of the game isn't much fun because the wealthy use their money to make more money and the rest ultimately get driven out of the game. Same principle works here, and as a country, we are at that point. The recent news that 1% of the population had earned more that 22% of the income, and that the bottom 50% of the population had earned just 12% should indicate that we are near the 'end of the game'.
We need to fix that, otherwise, history tells us that it always ends in revolt.
So to fix it, why don't we take all of the wealth from the families of businessmen who have lied, cheated and stolen to build their fortunes? Let's take every ill-gotten dollar from the criminals and their families, and redistribute it back into the low and middle WORKING class. Please note, there still needs to be no reward for not working... but an added incentive for everyone at the bottom of the pyramid that is willing to work to improve their condition. Criminals like Brooks, Sanjay Kumar, Michael Milliken, the Enron boys, Dennis Kozolowski from Tyco, etc all deserve to leave their families with none of the money they 'stole' from their businesses, and from the workers of this country.
Leave those who create wealth legally to keep it, but start the redistribution by stripping the wealth from the greedy and illegal.
