I am the wife of an Employee of Advance Auto Parts. I would like to speak over the phone with Darren Jackson or Michael Norona about the abuse of Employees from their District Managers.
We have heard great things about the men that are taking over this company.

I started with advanced in nov of 06. we did very well without a district manager then in mid 07 they hired a man from the carolinas that had been fired on numerous sexual harassment counts, and
he now is the district manager.from all that i have seen you can add racism and discrimination. this man has destroyed morale at this store, has raised the budget to an unrealistic level. while cutting hours when you are given a raise. the economy dictates a companies success depending on its flexibility in these times.

I read today that they are building a new office in Minnesota for the new CEO, so he doesn't have to slum with the employees at the headquarters in Roanoke. Until then he is using the corporate jet for commuting to & from Minnesota to Virginia.

Sounds like you've got another greedy ego tripping CEO on your hands.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investin...

Other execs negotiated sweet deals to take new jobs or renew their contracts.

Many Americans face the painful task of relocating when they take a new job; incoming Advance Auto Parts (AAP, news, msgs) chief Darren Jackson didn't. Before starting his job in early January, he persuaded the company to open offices near his Minnesota home so he wouldn't have to commute to the company's Roanoke, Va., headquarters.

The Minnesota offices won't be finished until June. Until then, Jackson can use a corporate jet to commute -- when he isn't working from home.

If you knew a little more about the new CEO, Darren Jackson, you would figure out that he has earned everything he has received. He comes from a blue collar family located in Western Michigan. His dad was a mail carrier for 30 years and his mom was a secretary. I know for a fact that his office at Best Buy was located on the financial floor and not on the executive floor at the company. So, slumming as you call it, doesn't seem to bother him.
Not to mention, how many times have you uprooted your family to relocate. Mr. Jackson has already done it twice. Both times half way across the country.
Also, didn't you not read the entire article where he is setting aside 3 million dollars of his bonus for incentives to lower management. If greed was his thing then he would keep it all.
Before you start ripping on a guy, get to know a little about him and his background.

I am an AAP employee, and this company prides itself on taking advantage of their employees.
After told how great of a job I was doing and how I would be compensated for my efforts, I was "rewarded" with a $0.18 raise.
This company does not value their employees one bit.

What a crockload! Why is he even getting a $3 million dollar bonus in the first place! Who cares about his family, we should be more concerned with the families of the employees who are going to end up paying for his bonus.

It's the same old crap. Just another greedy CEO who gives his employees a 2% raise while spending millions on new offices for himself and his nearest cronies. Speaking of his background in Michigan, this reminds me of the same kind of crap that went on at K-Mart before their new management ran it into bankruptcy.

You've got that right. Time after time I've bailed them out when nobody else would, especially when it came to cases where the store would've had to close its doors early if nobody showed up. Since August, I've shown up at work so there would be two people on staff so the store wouldn't have to close early.

I've always been to work on time. I've always been reliable. I've always been a hard worker. I was even personally thanked by the district manager for my hard work, and told that my efforts "would be remembered." Yeah, I my efforts were remembered with a $0.18 slap to the face. Not to mention the fact that I got an under-average review. Out of a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest, I received UNDER a 2.5, and this is after being told how good of an employee I was.

The first time I got a raise, I got $0.14 and an under-average review. They gave me an under-average review because my belt wasn't "shiny." Nowhere in the employee manual does it say that my belt needed to be "shiny." All it said was that the belt had to be a solid black, which it was.

Nobody at that company cares, Patty. I just turned in my 2 weeks notice last week, and the DM wants to speak with me to try to talk me into staying. GOOD LUCK ON THAT!

I'm good friends with the Assistant Manager of our store, and they also shafted her. She puts in over 70 hours per week, and then they had the audacity to give her a 1.75 review score. The next day after her review, she came into work literally in tears. I was so furious for what they had done to her that I came very close to walking out.

To say the least, I've "bailed them out" 7 or 8 times since August 2007 when others wouldn't help, or show up, just so the store wouldn't close. I told her, "Nothing against you, but the next time Advance Auto Parts is in a bind, don't call me to do bail them out. They don't do for me, but they want me to do for them? Forget'em."

I don't care who reads or sees this message, or they find out who I am. I will never go out of my way for Advance Auto Parts again, and there is nothing that would satisfy me more than to see them have to close early and lose money because they don't have two people in the store to work.

I also work for Advance Auto. Our district manager is a monster. He has destroyed our store since he took it over about four months ago. His newest thing is to push the forecast to unbelievable figures, and then "whip" us to death to try and reach it. He's brought in a young new manager that will do "anything he says out of fear" to do the dirty work for him. We have a high volume store, and cannot function with six regular sales people, 3 managers and five commercial people. Sometimes our daily sales are 30,000. As for raises, I got one. The HR head here gave it to me when this DM refused to acknowledge that I had a excellant review and was well overdue for one, so he, the head of HR granted me the raise. The very next schedule, guess who wasn't on it except for 4 hours for the week..yep, me. So they gave me the raise, and then wrote me off the schedule. This is how this DM plays the game. The DM is making sure he gets his bonus by cutting our payroll and beating us that way to somehow make us get more sales. If we don't, he takes, yes TAKES more of our payroll. This is no way to treat hardworking employees, we are the ones that are bringing in the money that all the higher ups enjoy. And he doesn't want "good" help for the store. If an employee is making a decent wage for a job well done, which is my case after waiting for four and one half years to get there, it's much cheaper to hire some 18 year old kid who'll work for next to nothing and dump the employee that has been loyal to the store. Then when the quality of the work is compromised, the DM simply blames the employees/manager and cuts our pay again. Either way, he's going to win. MR JACKSON, IF YOUR OUT THERE, ONE OF THE FOUR OUR COMPANY WAS FOUNDED ON WAS TO TREAT TEAM MEMBERS WITH RESPECT AND BE LIKE FAMILY. YOUR DISTRICT MANAGERS ARE RUNNING WILD, PLEASE HELP US!

This sounds very close to how our store operates. To say the least, I reneged on my "2 weeks notice," and I am still there, after twisting some arms to get a raise to $10.25/hr, which was surely more than the $0.18 they offered me to begin with, which would've brought my hourly wage from $9.14 to $9.32 per hour.

Now, the good part! I believe I was also penalized for it, and had been getting about 5-10 hours per week since being offered $10.25 to stay.

This is not an employee-friendly company to work for, and even less so for women. We refer to Corporate as the "Good Ol' Boy Network," which seems to be just about accurate across the board. I've talked to many female employees that work for Advance Auto Parts, and every single one of them are treated differently from the men. It seems to be par for the course to "bully" the women until they're finally worn down to the point of quitting.

Well, all I can say proudly that my last day with Advance Auto Parts will more than definitely be June 20th, as we are moving to a new location! I've decided that despite there being an Advance Auto Parts a few miles down the road, that I'm proudly leaving my "career" with Advance Auto Parts behind.

I have known Darren for many years now. You can rest assured he takes his responsibility for his employees very seriously.
The work complaints being referenced here are no different than any other company in the retail sector with (near) minimum wage employees.
He's been there for six months. Give him some time.

Things must have really changed. When I was recruited into Advance, this black woman had already succeeded working with men in the electrical and electronic field.
After meeting with the DM, I was put on a career path as a DM, so my job posts were different from they on the path for one of the subordinate positions.
I was getting 8.35 an hour which was pretty much top dollar even for a man, when I was there (1991). This was about 15 years ago. As manager, I was already guaranteed $600 a week.
To hear that you have to work so hard for just $10 is kind of weird. Are you sure that you have someone at the head of your store making sure that other costs are not out of whack? Because remember, Advance Auto Parts' stores are self sustaining, meaning that the payroll has to be such that it can support its employees. The lower you can make your costs internally, the more free money you will have to spread around to the employees. It is a team effort inorder to achieve this. The DM, if he is doing his job well, looks at all of the stores, even the region and wants everything to balance out. You know, one really bad store can make things bad for the others too.
Just wanted to share. Til this day, I am benefitting for Advances training. I was an Electronic Technician Bench Technician on high level government contracts when I came to Advance.
I am not at Advance Auto Parts now but I have been offered dynamite money in the past just to return to blow up those marketing areas with sales but I haven't elected to do so as yet.
Take it easy.

There are emplyee's just because they have been at an Advance Auto Parts Store longer than an emplyee who ranks over them think they can do as they wish. I'm not understanding this.. You give an employee the rank of a "Higher Position" and because the "Parts Person" has been there longer they do and say what they want and do as they please.(employee in which we are talking about is "Tonya" in Gaston,S.C. when ever anyone of the "Higher Manager's" say anything about her, their hours get cut back. This is supost to be a friendly and fun enviroment for the customer's as well as the employee's,so what is wrong with this picture ??? I've always like Advance Auto Parts for service, but since I have been an employee and have family in the business still,I am begining to wonder what else is going on.... CONFUSED>>>>

Yesterday (June 15th) was proudly my last day at Advance Auto Parts, and I couldn't be happier.

That is awesome that you had such good luck with them, but from my experiences with them, women that are treated well by them are few and far between.

As for the DM, he's a real "piece of work," to put it lightly. He's bullied everyone that has ever worked for him, especially the assistant manager of the store. He's bullied her into tears, and has just said some really cruel things to her, and has just treated her very poorly.

I am familiar with the payroll that you speak of, and while we do a good business, very little is given to the employees in return.

Good luck with whatever you choose in the future, Norma.:)

Thank you. Sorry for your bad experience. You know, maybe another store where you can ask others face to face how they like their store could offer you a better Advance Auto experience. I know that getting a good supportive team is hard, keeping it is even harder because the schedule can be grueling if even one employee isn't supportive and doesn't show up for work or comes in constantly late.
As far as the bullying manager, he probably wanted the assistant manager to quit so he made her 'so uncomfortable at work' to make her want to quit. Bad tactic!
Respect on the job stems from the management down. If the manager is weak and does not maintain order everything falls apart such as in the case of a subordinate usurping management.
Take it easy too, and God Bless. I hope the best for you.

advanced auto is one of the most mismanaged companies around. the lack of communication with upper management and the egotistical field managers is davastating this company by depressing its employees thus causing the knowledge in the stores to leave. they then hire low grade employees that have not one shred of knowledge about how to use the parts books. we have had bad sales due to female employees that trust to much in the info on the computer catalogue. this is stupidity in the first degree and causes lost sales, educate these people ,pay the knowedgable employee more to keep them . shafting your employees is criminal, discrimnation is also a crime, racism is a crime, under paying an employee that produces between 3000.00 and 4000.00 a week by themselves should have some kind of reward for having sales above the managers of the store and placing in the top 4 of their for the last 14 months. incentives work spifs are an insult.
