I have a young man staying with me because his mother threw him out again and I decided this was going to be the last time. He went to DG here in Belleview, Fl to apply. He was hired although the manager never seemed to have time to really speak to him. In a 5 min meeting handed him some papers and told him to go have a drug test within 24hrs or asap. She knew he didnt have a car, he explained this upfront, so it was going to be a day or two before he could arrange to get a ride into Ocala for the test. He called her the next day, no response, called her the following day and she told him that he had had to get the test within 24hr or he couldnt apply again for a year. This woman did not take the time to be clear in her instructions. His meeting was at 6pm on Monday, he asked her when she had entered the info into the computer, thinking if she was so busy and it was late she may not have done it til tuesday and he might have time to run over there, she said when did you come in? He said Monday, she asked what is today, like she really didnt know, she was that harried...(It was Wednesday at 12:30am.) She says she did it on Monday night and that it would be pointless to go take the test now. Its a shame that she couldnt take the time to actually be clear in her instructions and say if you dont get there within 24 hrs, dont bother. Not do it within 24 hrs or asap. This store has had more managers than I have fingers and toes in the last five years. I have no doubt that she is overworked. Its probably a blessing that he couldnt get the job.. if she had no time to speak to him when he was a customer and potential employee, I can only imagine how she would have been had he gained employment. The woman has no people skills at all. As a consumer in this small town, I wont hesitate to relate this experience to my friends and neighbors. I am considering not even shopping there anymore. I cant imagine being treated like that. To get this kids hopes up and then thru her own negligence, he loses the chance at employment is a shame and a sham... just a waste of his time, energies and as for her... space....Next....

As A store manager of DG myself i find it degrading to hear other managers degrade the very company that believes enough in us to provide us an opportunity to better ourselves. i have been with the company almost three years and although i know its stressfull and time consuming its a fine job and i personally feel that its not the companies fault other managers haven't mastered the skill of delegating their responsibilities. If managed correctly, their payed well for the amount of work they do. its all about enjoying what you do and teamwork.
LOL....LOL...LOL....
No wonder you said bumbside

Well lets just say that most of this complaining is so true. When i became manager i had a terrific DM. She tried to help me as much as she could. I worked in my store for about a month and then had to go to "store manager training." When i came back I had a new DM and she said she would help but didnt really. When I came back from training I had to get ready for inventory and had no idea how to get ready. My new DM told me to reaqd the inventory packet. She sent in a crew to help with the overstock and to face the cartons with the warehouse label on the front so the inventory crew could count easier. The store I was put in was a high shrink store and had to be on a conference call for high shrink. as a new manager I had so much to deal with and very little help. Not to mention everyone in my store with a exception of one or two was sliding merchandise. i found that out after the fact. The dm and lp auditor came in whenever they wanted and took over my office and told me very little about what was going on. On inventory day my dm did a store visit and an lp audit and failed me on both then wrote me up. She told me that i wass not responsible for the inventory numbers since i hadnt been there long but now that it was over it was my baby now. I am so glad to be away from that place. I worked 80-90 hrs a week because i never had enough help. and the only day off i had i would be called because the other assistants couldnt run the store long enough for me to have a day off.

I am a mgr in Ms and our district is like most of
yours. We had/have a great DM but so much has changed lately that he has also. Our RM is a joke. He has all but told us that we are to recover recover recover and not take care of our customers.
We have also been told that we are not to buy anything from our store to eat or drink while we are at work because we maybe stealing. Although we have a reciept on everything but if it can not be eaten in our 30min or hour break then it has to be thrown away. We are not allowed to leave anything over night. I dont know if this is everywhere or not but it is an issue here. We also had to throw away our trash cans from outside away so that means now two or three time we go to clean the parking lot. Like we dont have enough to do.

My fiance is a new store mngr and im looking for some advice!!!! Her dm misrepresented the store to my fiance before she started. She told her that the store was a perfect model store which was an apparent lie when she started. since her start date she has only recieved her two week instore traing, she has yet to recieve her "school training". but as soon as she got in the door her payroll was cut tremendously! her dm has threatened to fire her multiple times for things out of her controll including stopping a shoplifter. dg has a "smart team" they where in her store to do a remodel and where suppossed to set her seasonal section but failed to do so. the dm failed to check before she signed off on the "smart team" and when my fiance brought it to her attn she stated that she was to get it done along with her other duties within a 24 hr period. my fiance has worked 92 hrs this week alone i have no idea what to do. she tried to call corp but the hr guy that answered he said it was not in her best interest to make a complaint and when she asked for his name he hung the phone up! any suggestions are truly appreciated!!!!! PS everything that needs to be done i to be done with lil to no payroll!! HELP ME!!!

It's not going to get better either.I am seeking other employment and will leave DG asap. DG has no respect for their employees because they're a dime a dozen with the unemployment rate right now.

To DG MANAGER,
Its sad that you defend such a poor run company.
I would say that you have very little managment outside of dollar general, if you did I think that you would know that being a manager consist more of being a manager and not free labor, you can get on hear and defend them all you want but take time to think about what all you have to do in a week and then tell me that you really are a manger and not just cheap labor take what you make and divide that by the hours you have to work, think about the next time you unload that truck or workout that rolltainer or have to set a planagram how many other managers at other companies are having to work as hard as you. Want a quick reality check take a good look at the end of the day at you tan pants and black shirt and your hands and compare that to your underpaid cashier and see who is the dirtiest of the two bet i know the answer if you answer honestly, then go take a good look at you office, charts, planner, planagrams, ez planners, your matrix schedules your TA sheets your backroom include your totes dont forget about your add on orders your adjustments your stock counts your recovery your huddle your stars your literacy amount your damages your fex area for pricing your alpha signs your ad signs (should I go on) see what I mean the job of what should be at least three people but I am sure that huge wage (hahaha) that Dollar General pays you makes it all worth while.
Another quichk check look at your paycheck stub see where it says 40 hours in how many days did it take you to get 40 about 4 right keep in mind you are required 6 wheres those other hours reported at.
How about on Saturday morning when you have to go key in payroll and the managers have to key in that they only worked 1 hour for the whole week seem a little crooked to you I know that it does to the wage and labor board.
Think real careful about what ive said and look at it thru open eyes.
Perfect answer......... This is the whole truth and nothing but the truth... one more thing though.... You work like a dog, you make the store better then it has ever been, kick butt sales, reduce shrink, store set right for the first time ever.... and then you have other Managers in the same district as you that has less sales then your's that get more payroll then you do every week and the D.M. story is that Corp. decides payroll not him ...Bull Crape...

You know.. I have been a store manager for DG for alittle over a year now. I have ran two stores so far for DG. And I have to say this. When you have to keep a store open for 12+ hours a day seven days a week and your payroll for the week is less then 1600 dollars... I'm sure you can guess what happens. Thats right! It's the store manager that gets to spend all thier time at the store because they don't have the payroll to hire more people or let the other two managers work some of the shifts. I spend well over 60 hrs a week in my store. If you take my pay vs the time I work. I make less in $9.00/hr My ast. make more per hour then I do. And to be honest, I don't Manage anything.. I throw stock all day because I can afford to hire someone else to do it. Most days I like my job. I really do. But when I stop and look at it.. I start to wonder how my daughter is doing, haven't seen her in four days... Is it worth it? No it's not. But what are you going to do.. It's hard to find a job that pays as much as I make. Just sucks that I have to give up the rest of my life so that me and my kid can eat.

I worked for DG for 4 years, talk about being abused and used!!! The store I worked at was very busy and theft is high from customers. But it was the employees who got the blame. I no longer work there however my frined does and she still tells me all the crap that goes on. I got blamed for theft why the hell would I loose a $7.75 job for a $1.00 to support my kids and I?? Not even, I have more income then the manager not working with other source. I EVER HERE THAT I WAS STEALING AGAIN I WILL SUE THE MANAGER, DM, AND THE COMPANY FOR SLANDER. SO WARNING TO THE DM'S AND MANAGERS IT CAN HAPPEN SO WATCH WHAT YOU SAY.

I have worked for DG for 1 year. I really enjoy working there and I think DG is a great company. I am a full-time college student and I work full-time at DG. They are always happy to work around my school schedule and I have had two promotions since I started. The pay isn't the greatest although management can make decent money. The lowest paid manager in my district makes 27,500. they agreed to start me at 30k within a year. My DM is awesome and very helpful. The job can be very demanding but only lazy people complain and don't get the requirements done. When I read the negative comments on here it disgusts me because lazy people are giving the company a bad name. SHUT UP AND GET A DIFFERENT JOB IF YOU HATE IT!! THEY DO REQUIRE A LOT OF THEIR EMPLOYEES BUT ADVANCEMENT IS VERY POSSIBLE IF YOU WORK HARD. YOU CAN ALSO TRANSFER ANYWHERE IN THE EASTERN HALF OF THE U.S. IF YOU WISH.

I'm glad that you feel good about DG.One day you'll be in for a rude awakening. My guess is you're young and pretty and let's not forget somewhat intelligent. That'll get you some space for now. As much as you'd like to believe all negative comments are from lazy people, you are oh so wrong. Most all neg. comments are correct.DG has a way of sucking the life out of you. It's not about family with DG. If you've got a family they are second to DG.Dedication, hard work,I'd say we all did that at one time. That's why alot of comments are from former employees. There will be more former employees when the economy improves and the job market opens up.
So good luck with the job. Reality will set in soon enough.
