BLT Steak is expanding chain to Trump in Waikiki - Hawaii Business

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

BLT Steak is not bacon-lettuce-tomato-steak, but the acclaimed steak house concept of chef and restaurateur Laurent Tourondel - set to open late this year on the ground floor of Trump International Hotel & Tower in Waikiki.

$200.00/lunch place should be standing room only in these economic times. I think this is exactly what Waikiki needs at this time, another very high end eatery, when people realize that they paid $200-500,000 to much for a Trump unit, they might be eating a real homemade BLT for lunch for awhile...time will tell I suppose, it always does.

This is fantastic news for the cheaper restaurants, because the consumer can see what a great deal it is at everywhere else in the neighborhood.

Good luck charging those prices in a down recession. I don't think this chef did his homework on the eating habits the natives have here.

"Bitter" party, your table is ready...
1. Recessions don't last forever.
2. There's already a Denny's on Kalia Road.
3. This isn't a "locals" restaurant, neither is Nobu. Most locals I know boast about how many years it's been since they've set foot in Waikiki.
4. Lunch at the Halekulani isn't cheap either.
5. If you're not living in Hawaii but want to, blame yourself, you've made decisions in your life that don't make that possible right now. Deal with it, most people don't have it all.
That said, Rourondel needs to be local enough to know that Waikiki isn't a city, Honolulu is. If he plans on making a Hawaiian-inspired menu, he should probably come here. This article only says that he MAY.

I would definiley eat at BLT. Fine dining is for those of us that can afford it, and appreciate the quality and care that go into it. It is not for everyone and the market will bare the costs. Just like Alan Wongs or Roy's. When I am in vegas I do not dine at Denny's

If they don't get in now, they may lose an opportunity. Eventually Waikiki will come back. Hope they got enough money to ride out the storm.

Well maybe if more locals got well paying jobs then they could afford to eat there. Don't blame anyone if the local people can't make enough money to go out to a nice place once in a while.

$100/person is not bad. Try $300/person at many fine dining restaurants in New York.

Wolfgang Steakhouse in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is very good. About $100 for a porterhouse that feeds two. They dry age their steak in house and it is delicious.

What cheaper restaurants in the neighborhood? Roys, Ruths Chris, Yard House. There is nothing cheap in that neighborhood except Dennys.

Outsider chef bringing in more outsiders with their bad attitudes. The Japanese aren't traveling as much to Hawaii, and soon CA residents will be living in a BKed cesspool. Who is going to eat $100-200 steaks?

I highly doubt that BLT is targeting locals. If so, why Waikiki? I'm sure that these guys did their "homework," and better to enter the market now and start with "low" sales and watch it rise as the economy improves.

Fine dining and good food doesn't necessarily equate with high cost. PRETENTIOUS would decribe at least half of these restaurants and people who blindly patronize them. I've enjoyed fine food around the world and majority of the best food were gotten at places that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Lot of the restaurants in Waikiki are offering terrific discounts for locals or there's tons of discount coupons in the papers. For example, CPK Waikiki offers 20% off to locals, PF Chang has discount lunch offers all the time, Top Of Waikiki and Shorebird has 50% off specials, and Lau Yee Chai (bet you haven't heard this name in a while) has $7.50 complete lunch deals.

Cannot beat Blazin' Steaks! Tasty, tender, and only $6!

Regardless of price, I enjoy a Blazin' Steaks plate far more than a steak from Morton's.

At Blazin' Steaks you can feed 10 people the 1 Lb. plate and still have money left over by not having to pay that $25 tip.

Bring you meals home and you can get a couple of bottles of nice red wine to go with it!
