To help Shelly Bookwalter rescue more dogs, and help with the vet bills (because she pays for everything out of her own pocket), you can donate directly to her new charity Southern Jewel Dog Rescue. Her website is still under construction, and she will receive her 501c(3) non-profit designation soon.

Please help Shelly and please e-mail her new dog rescue information to everyone. She really needs the financial help.

I'd just like to say, it's an honor to be in such great company. There's a whole other world outside what most people see in regards to animals...Those of us who live the "rescue" life see first hand the heartbreak, despair and helpless state thousands and thousands of innocent animals live in daily. While we can not save them all, we try...we never give up, we can't afford too. For every dog or cat living n a loving home there are literally thousands being abandoned, starved, abused and neglected...But those we can save change our lives...forever making us better people and leaving a space which resonates with love and keeps us moving forward. Thank you Animal Planet for making there world see and their silent voices heard! BRAVO!

Thank you for going out of your way w/with kindess to get this info on Hope for all of us so concerned about her. I truly think Shelly went the extra mile w/Hope for 5-6 mos and had nothing but Hope's best intentions at heart. The winters in TN/MS and the south in general were brutal this year and her heart just wanted to help. The social worker told her she lived quite close the central park and Shelly stressed to her to keep her on a harness. Who the heck knows what happened? Why in the world would you change a rescue's name, especially's a feral's, from Hope to Melissa? There's no way she'll answer to that. No way.
Warmest thanks, again.
Positive thoughts and prayers.
thank you for your search, and I hope that the shelter puts Hope to her new name, so we know when she has been found, I pray that when she she found that she goes back to Shelly, who loves and understands her, and then maybe be put in a good home. I cried so many tears over her. please stay in touch with the shelter

I am trying to find any info on the LCH dog "Hope"--she slipped her collar and is missing. Has she by chance been found? Any info out there?

I just watched the show where Hope was adopted out to Rebecca. Most are assuming that Rebecca did not use a harness like Shelly told her. How does anyone know that this was the case? Maybe she was wearing a harness and slipped out? Maybe it was not on tight enough because Rebecca didn't want to hurt her? Come on don't assume. Shelly uses her own money to get this babies new homes. She tries very hard to get the right dog to the right home. She paid for Hope to be at the vet for 5 months to get her well and tried to find someone special. Things happen. I am sure Shelly feels just as bad that this this baby ran away. Shelly your an Angel for saving these puppies!!

I just called the Animal Haven shelter that found Hope and re-adopted her out. It was months ago, and Hope (renamed Melissa) was adopted out to an upstate person (near Oneonta). Again, the dog escaped. This was months back, and she has still not been found. Only good news is that the dog has been microchipped, so if she is found, they will return her to Animal Haven. The shelter person I spoke to had fostered her briefly and said the dog had no interest in either her as a person, or in her dog. Clearly still very shy and not an ideal pet for most people. Truly hope she gets found.
Can you please clarify which shelter person you spoke to? Which rescue? and the party said the dog had no interest in either her as a person or in her dog? I'm trying to understand what that means. The foster from what rescue or the adopter is who Hope had no interest in.

I was very concerned about that placement. The dog wasn’t ready to be adopted and certainly wasn’t ready to be sent to New York. I feel that Shelly dropped the ball on that one.
The series is on hiatus which may mean the end of it. The work that all of their rescuers do is amazing ,but please have them stop saying there are no unwanted or abandoned dogs in the East and that’s why they send the dogs there. That’s not a true statement. Dog in the East are being put to sleep on a daily basis.

Just curious~ if a dog is transported from the south and adopted and the adoption doesn't work out for some reason, where does the dog end up then?

Sorry. Your comments were not posted when I posted mine! I agree. If Hope had been feral from birth, or a very long time, she bonded with Shelly-her first MaMa. She probably feels totally abandoned.
Wonder if Shelly would take her back!!!!!!!!!!

To Second Chance Rescue - I have a Double Dog Rescue dog that I adopted and according to the agreement I signed, if I am unable to keep my dog, I must notify Double Dog Rescue and give her back. I believe she would then be re-homed. Double Dog Rescue is located in CT as well as down South.

To all those who are still wondering what happened to Hope and the status of her search, there is a page called Help Find Hope on Facebook if you are a member. This is a chance for people to do what they can to help find this dog.

Animal Haven has released no information about Hope. Exactly when and where was she lost? The ACO in Oneonta, NY knows nothing about her(wouldn't Animal Haven have called?). 500 fliers have been posted,1,300 people contacted with an automated phone call, no post on the internet. There are good people trying to help find Hope & neither Animal Planet or Al Roker Productions have come forward with any assistance or information. Why?
