These owners and venture capitalists are scum. All these UNION workers should behave in the same way. Stop paying all their mortgages and loans immediately. Let the lender handle all your problems. Don't use your savings!!!!! Whether it is the hotel business, a car manufacturer or a government position, unions are scabs - nothing more. They act without merit and are always self-serving. They are simply unecessary in contemporary American society.

Look at the mess he left behind, unchecked. He managed to take a good concept, mismanage it and create the current situation. Where are the WMD and Bin Laden? And then of course, there are people like you, opportunists, who choose to take a false standpoint and conveniently blame others. It is clear why "you" voted for Bush,

How sad, good souls like these face a financial catastrophe while the public worker unions still refuse to share ANY of the burden of this economic disaster. God bless Gov. Lingle and her efforts to support the working people of Hawaii, and shame on the unions and Legislature who have told Hawaii's people to drop dead.

I will enforce the local law to keep these laid off workers employed! They can be my new landscapers and housecleaners. KY has been getting on me for years that she is tired of washing dishes and pulling weeds. Of course we can't pay union wages, but we can squeeze something out and even pay cash. Remember not too much starch on my robes, it causes fading.

I can remember the good ole days chumming with McGarett at his penthouse pad. We had a blast. He would joke around saying he would bust us when the party got a bit out of hand. He would tell Dano to book those chicks and hand cuff them. They never resisted arrest. Ahhh the good ole days, tear the joint down. Fade to black....applause.

Manoa wrote: Who would want to start up a new hotel now when business is so bad and all it would do is lose money? Would the union workers want to contribute all their savings and pensions into buying the hotel knowing they would not be able to pay themselves even minimum wage? What we need to hope is someone will come along rich enough to have the money plus the guts to take a chance and buy the hotel from istar which is reallly just a bank that got burned as much as the union is. They may be able to trim the staff and cut expenses enough to make a go of it and throw their money into it. This is a hobby hotel and not a business. I don't know if they need guts, or a bit of a foolish streak. Take a look at Waikiki, there are plenty of hotels...too many. The reason Ilikai went under was because it could not keep up with all the luxuries offered in Waikiki over the last 5-10 years. With nothing new or unique... no reason for guests to stay there. The fact is, Waikiki was overdeveloped and now hotels/workers are suffering. We put all our eggs in one basket... the asian market hoping the Japanese and Chinese would keep our hotels booming. That was foolish and now the state must suffer. When are we ever going to look beyond the tourism industry?

There is no future!!!!!!!! They will lay the employees off and rehire them back at eight dollars an hour.

The Ilikai will convert to time shares after refurbishing the hotel rooms. This has been the successful model over the past 10 years in which these conversions if centrally located like the Ilikai will be good investments. Canadians will surely invest in this property. IMO.

Ilikai is an eyesore. Tourism does not like outdated cement towers like this anymore. Waikiki is hideous and doomed.

This is another sad chapter on the decline of Hawaii as a tourist destination. I feel for the employees of the Ilikai Hotel. Unfortunately demonstrating and picketing won’t solve anything. The problem is much deeper. It is the result of the ineptness, greed, corruption and sheer ignorance of our politicians and public officials. I used to work in tourism, I lost my job and it was frustrating watching a bunch of clowns making a mess of everything they touched. I used to listen to the visitors complain and ask with disappointment in their voices, Is this Hawaii? Sadly, now it is. And until we get rid of all the idiots and replace them with competent and honest people, the tourism will lead nowhere but downhill.

Suggestion. Have the Hotel Workers Union buy the hotel, operate and staff it.
