government incentives? Do you expect the government to do it all for you? Are you a ****? How aobut a great place to live.
Fact: Communities all across the country offer incentive for businesses to move, start up or expand there. They know even with the tax breaks they offer as incentives, it will provide jobs, attract other businesses, enable educational opportunites and offer economic security to the community. Unfortunately, our community does not do this in a way that competes for these businesses and now has voted out an opportunity to do this. Rather than being stagnant and not be able to provide for the community or worse, a community that bases it's economy on illegal drugs (what are we, Columbia?), I'd rather have a great place to live.

What happened to being gracious losers and what kind of message are you all sending to your kids? The message I see is:

The graciousness was right here, in post no. 23-

"As a supporter of Measure A I feel the voters of Mendocino County have made a mistake by rejecting redevelopment at the Masonite site. That said I take consolation in the fact it was a choice of the voters, and in the end Democracy ruled the day, something we should all be proud of having participated in. I can accept a concensus from my friends and neighbors, even though I feel this decision will pound one more nail in the coffin of Mendocino County."

The response I got was to STFU, move away, etc., etc., and although I had hoped we could all move on it's obvious the SOLE people are using this vote to try and drive people out of Mendocino county if they don't agree with them. It's sad so many of us came up here looking for a location we could express our POVs (and face it, we have some weird ones) and now those same people who preach tolorance are now trying to silence dissent.

Hey Mike, The move out stuff is just a good ribbing. Nobody wants anybody to move although the DDR folks can go home now.. Participating in the election and the democratic process is something we should all be proud of. It is not just our right but also our responsibility to our children and the future. I don't know anything about sole but I doubt they have any agenda to run anyone out of the county. Don't mistake tolerance or the lack there of with dissent. We are a successful society because we are free to express healthy dissent. That's American.

All of the people that are upset this measure lost, you do realize there is already an area in Ukiah that is ZONED commercial. It has plenty of room for a Target, Costco, whatever. Measure A losing doesn't mean that there isn't space for these retailers. Measure A losing means we saw past the bull that DDR was trying to sell us. You do know that Costco told DDR to stop using its name in its advertising because they did not have a plan to go into that site. You do know that the retailers DDR listed did not have an agreement to go into that site. DDR spent 1.5 million on this election selling their bull. Spouting off about being green and local.....did a local print those glossy flyers that were oh so green?(sarcasm)

Yep, and the SoCal marketing firm execs. that produced them once spent a weekend in Mendocino, or maybe one of their employees did, which makes them local too! How about those out of county Attorneys who wrote that pig? How about the bussed in paid signature gatherers from elsewhere? Where were the slick ads printed? Mendo Co., I bet not! How about the out of state Economic HiT Men? Locals?
These guys were so arrogant they never did get it! If they clean up the site that will bring some local jobs and some good will. Also then you will not waste our time and resources again! DDR have firmly established themselves as Mendo. Co. Enemies as of the vote. Arrogant, lying, short sighted and greedy = DDR!

Lets see..If I want to raise my kids in this beautiful valley I better teach them how to trim bud at an early age or plan on saying good bye to them after high school. We have no jobs to offer our youth! The people that didn't want this to pass are the same losers that stand in front of the courthouse every Friday giving us all something to laugh at! Get a job so the rest of us have a fighting chance at getting what we want in this town. Actually, the election was probably fixed anyway. Oh, and PLEASE take a shower!

Yep... folks like Dave Smith, Janie "Monster Mall" Sheppard, Guinness McFadden, Mari Rodin, Mary Ann Landis, Tom Thornhill, John McCowan, Cliff Paulin... all moved here from some other place, and think they own the place. They have nothing better to do with their time than local politics. I have never seen Mulligan Books sponsor a baseball or soccer team. Janie? Nope.
Maybe they are the ones who should move if they are not happy with where the community is going. Having watched these people act in this election shows me how un-small town and neighborly they are. They have been very nasty and intimidating throughout this election. As someone who sat back and observed both sides from afar, interesting in who was telling the truth... I saw the No on A people lie continually. They used several "half truths" and tried to scare people. They used misdirection and all sorts of political hack tactics. From the other side, I saw the same message over and over and over. Very consistent... and in abundance. Maybe too much so... but the message was the same throughout. I checked facts from both sides and never caught the Yes people in any lies. The other side... all the time. Whether is was "no water" or the tax payers having to pay for the traffic issues, or DDR is bankrupt, or the mall costing the county money for public safety and leaving out the income the county would get. Lie after lie after lie.
And the worst part is, these are the same people who are preaching about being small town and neighborly with each other... saying DDR is the evil outsider. Well, I watched the people from DDR and found them to be nice, pleasant and straight forward. Being Neighborly is telling the truth and just being honest with one another. And also, it's not gloating over a win. I guess you did not notice that several thousands of your neighbors voted for this... so is it neighborly to beat your chest on how bad you beat the evil corporation, and leave out how you defeated your neighbors?
I was really shocked at the selfishness from the people opposing this measure. They seemed not to care that thousands of people are out of work in this county, and they just destroyed the one chance we have of getting jobs. After this, who would want to come here? You have managed to keep out any outsider who might want to come here in the future. Congrats. Mendocino County will stay the same. Broke. Good job. Pat your selfs on the back some more. Cherish this day. It gets worse from here on out... for others. Not for yourselves you selfish bastards.
I think all those you name are pretty happy with the direction the community is going. Unless you didn't notice the overwhelming number of the voters agreed with them. And in case you didn't notice DDR had their hiney kicked all the way back to Ohio. Maybe it is you who are not happy with the direction the rest of us are going. But stick around, now that the DDR fiasco is down the drain we have an opportunity to create the future we want.

Interesting that you say McCowan moved here from somewhere else. His mother was my junior high English teacher in 1955. I think his relatives first came to the county in the early days when people crossed the plains in covered wagons. But your knowledge here is as faulty as it is on DDR. I too studied all the issues and I don't see how anyone can say DDR was telling the truth. And with DDR's junk bond financial rating and the downward spiral of the retail economy, it should be clear they were not going to build anything at the Masonite site for years to come, if ever. The much promised jobs were an illusion, the water source is in question, the revenue benefits were speculative and the shopping can take place at the south end of town, when and if Costco wants to come here.

PS: The election is over and you lost. Get use to it. I have never seen a whinier bunch of sore losers than the Yes on A people.

Ha ha. Funny. "Responsibility to our children and our future?" You no growth advocates couldn't care less about our future or you wouldn't oppose each and every proposal for growth that gets submitted.

At any rate I'm going to take the advice of those who keep saying I should leave- kinda. My money will be withdrawn from Mendocino Savings Bank and transferred to Bank of America. I'll boycott Ukiah businesses, with only a couple of exceptions. I will spend my money in Mendocino county, and if that's not possible I'll drive to Sonoma county to spend my money. I will no longer participate in civic functions like the chili cook off, Farmers market, or comedy ally.

Other than that though I'll continue to live here and keep my business here, but I won't spend a nicken in the Ukiah city limits.

There you are, still calling those who disagree with you names. But since 19 of 20 City Council members and 4 out of 5 supervisors were against Measure A it looks like our leaders are in step with the people, at least on this one. And it looks like you are out of step with the people and our leaders. And why are you so angry? Were you getting paid by DDR to be one of their local shills?

I can not believe that the people of this County believes they did the right thing.
First you say that you want to shop locally.
Next you say we do not need Costco and its likes here.
Then you say we already have property down by the airport for these companies.
You contradict yourselve constantly.

Another example of your contradiction is your law of no genetic altered plants in the county.
But you allow all or any form of Marijuana to grow here in this county.
Todays marijuana is nothing but genetically altered.

Then you do not even properly tax the legal grows.
You constantly let possible tax money get away with you ignorance.

No it isn't.
You apparently are confusing genetic modification with selective breeding. Two different things altogether.

Yeah you definitely are bewildered if you think cannabis has been genetically altered. Never has happened yet. Yes we have selectively bred it to make it better but all the genetics are natural.

When they say shop local they mean the shops on state street, not company stores that take the money elsewhere...And growing pot is what they want. Keeping the big stores out keeps out non locals who they seem to worry about alot because non locals will give them way more competition in the growing trade than they want..

Mendo growers and law want status quo, they seem comfortable with it.

The people of this county rejected the DDR project. This election was not even close. Its time to get on with our future and work towards common solutions and goals. This was not about growth it was about proper growth. I am sure we have a few folks out there that are anti growth but for the most part the voters of this copounty want what the feel is the best for our county. Both thoses whom voted for and aganist A. If DDR goes to the county to give it ago great and it would be my hope that the issues that DDR had not addressed will be. Masonite site most likely will or is up for sell .We all can hope that a more progressive and community driven project will take root on the site, not the old amercian standard and yesterdays failed economic developement plan that DDR had offered the voters of this county.

I agree, Mike...as a supporter of Measure A, I'll be avoiding downtown businesses with a couple of exceptions...Triple S Camera and Mendocino Bounty, where I am treated with respect, regardless of my position. Also, be sure to patronize Rainbow Ag...John Mayfield stuck his neck out on Measure A, and he deserves support for being someone with common sense regarding our budget woes in the county. I wouldn't bank with The Money Laundry of Mendocino County if they gave me 20 percent on my cd's.

Daily Horoscope for December 11

Scorpio

Take it slowly today otherwise you'll be almost guaranteed to lose your temper and make yourself very unpopular in the process. If someone is annoying you, you won't need any encouragement to start a row because you're looking for outlets for your current ire and irritation. OK, but do your best to direct your anger at the person who deserves it and not at innocent bystanders.
