Gates’ function as Secretary of Defense was not to serve as a “Yes” man for Obama, but to advise the president on military matters. The president had the option of going along with what Gates recommended or deciding on a different course of action because as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, he holds the final say.

It is better to have a president who questions and challenges his staff and department heads to a president who blindly goes along with what is presented. JFK had no problem challenging his generals over the Cuban missile crisis. Had Kennedy given in to the pressure from his generals and taken military action, a nuclear war between the USSR and the US might have followed.

On the other hand we had GWB who never questioned or challenged and deferred to Rumsfeld and his generals. A healthy dose of skepticism and caution would have been best.

In his book, Gates otherwise praised Clinton in a way that “might be used in a political endorsement,” Woodward wrote in his review.
Gates wrote:“I found her smart, idealistic but pragmatic, tough-minded, indefatigable, funny, a very valuable colleague, and a superb representative of the United States all over the world.”
The Democrats didn't think so highly of Hillary in 2008, did they? They gave the old broad the heave ho, dumped her like she was a $10 street corner trick.
.
I didn't care for Hillary anymore than I did for Barack, but Hillary would have been the smarter choice, Instead they went for the black guy who had a little strut, a little shimmy and a few pat phrases.

Which means in 2016 if he runs against Hillary, he'll probably win the Democrat nomination. You know how those Democrats like black men with brains *cough*.

Ouch*

The dipocrats dumped Hillary to give a Brother a shot. I'm sure there are some grasy headed old lie-beral farts who patted her hand and told her it was for the good of the party to have her edged out by a nobody Black junior Senator from Illinois. But they'd make it up to her *next time*. THEN it'll be her turn to be Prez. What ELSE could she do? After all, she's used to men cheating on her......

Are you implying US education system is unfair, that if George W. Bush could not make it past the second grade, they would even let him go through Yale?

flubs didn't have the balls to go to Dover.
I was seriously depressed when we learned that we were going to be stuck with the Shrub for another four years, even worse than I was when he took office for the first term.

But, like it or not, he went to Dover rather frequently...usually in the early AM hours and without the press corp. And since I have several vets in my family, I can only commend him for doing that, and doing it for reasons other than a photo op.

He also visited Ft. Hood a day or two after the shooting, met with the victims family members and visited the troops stationed there. He lives close by, he brought a small security unit with him, so as not to alert the media, and the soldiers and commanders at Fort Hood were under orders that no pictures be taken. But some got out, anyway. The majority of enlisted men and women genuinely like the Shrub.

I know this from a career military relative, whose closest friend for the last 40 plus years is a recently retired five star general whose name most Americans are familiar with. He, BTW, was not a fan of the Shrub, but he gives him credit where credit is due.

Hussein and mooshell talked it over and agreed that it was only fitting that they have a commemorative stamp of themselves in their honor showing an imperial picture of the two of them together in all of their glory. After launching the stamp with the usual fanfare, the stamp turned out to be a big failure because the stamp wouldn't stick to an envelope. Hussein commissioned a committee to study why the stamp wouldn't work. The committee came back with the finding that people were spitting on the wrong side of the stamp.

Hussein obama was walkin around on the White House grounds admiring the snow with abdul, a very close man friend of his, when he sees the words, "obama sucks" written in pee on a snow drift. Angered, hussein calls in the FBI and the Secret Service and demands that they find out who did it. After several days the Secret Service came back and says we did find out that the pee was bill clinton's but, unfortunately, it was mooshell's handwriting.
that's funny!!

Iraq’s ambassador to Washington says the Obama administration doesn’t fully grasp the consequences of failing to more aggressively combat a surging al Qaeda threat inside his country, pointedly suggesting that President Obama has been less engaged with Baghdad than his predecessor.
