How to save the U.S. Postal Service

There are 24 comments on the The Washington Post story from Aug 10, 2012, titled How to save the U.S. Postal Service. In it, The Washington Post reports that:

The outside of the Old City Post Office in Washington, now the National Postal Museum, bears a noble inscription to the mail: "Bond of the Scattered Family/ Enlarger of the Common Life/ Carrier of News and Knowledge/ Instrument of Trade and Industry." It's a proud statement on what the mail used to be.

"It's a proud statement on what the mail used to be."

'USED' to be is the key word(s).

DON'T SAVE THE USPS.

They deserve to die a slow, miserable death for the horrible ways they have treated and CONTINUE to treat their bread and butter:

The Customer.

It has to do with letting the world know the truth about the postal service and WHY they are going out of business.

CRAPPY CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Privatize these *itches already and FIRE those arrogant fk workers who are giving them a bad name.

NO RETIREMENT for the pig workers who CONTINUALLY piss on the customer.

Let them apply at McDonald's.

HELLO CONGRESS.

Why not send out suggestion cards to ALL the people who receive mail?

Then you'd get an idea of how PISSED OFF we are (and have been for YEARS) about the crap service we've had to endure from all of the postal pricks who abuse their federal protection in order to harass customers with impunity.

NO WONDER people are running to UPS and FEDEX in DROVES.

PRIVATIZE the USPS already and make the bad workers GO AWAY.

Pay $12 to send a letter to Iowa via Fedex and UPS!
.
FKing holes the USPS had made it possible for small business to advertise and even finish their commerce with far-away customers.
.
I can't wait for the massive break in of internets accounts and the corresponding massive frauds that will reasult from such break in!
.
USPS is the only entity that will travel to every inch of the US to get it there! I am very proud of such workforce that no weather or wild animals or social violence or political instability can't stop them from doing the main mission: GET IT DELIVERED EVEN IF YOU ARE POOR, ABANDONED, FORGOTTEN OR SIMPLY SERVING A MILITARY POST IN THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS!

I used to complain about Kenya Post office services, but no more after trying USPS. My letter took 2 days from Nairobi to New york, now this, the fourth week my letter is still being processed at NY. I wonder what's going on.. are they counting alphabets used in every letter entering US?

There are a lot of people who deliver the mail every day who do a good job. They work in the heat, cold, wind, rain, and even with injuries that was caused doing the job. We handle thousands of pieces of mail a day. Some don't even have the correct address on them and we still get it delivered to the correct address because we know the people on our routes. And if we don't know we try to find out what the correct address is for that piece of mail. It is funny how people complain about a miss delivered piece of mail but they don't say thank you for delivering the piece that had the wrong address on it. And if you think privatizing the Postal Service would be a good thing what kind of person do you think would be handling your mail, with no background check. And the price for sending something would even be more. Like UPS and FedEx. It is true that the Postal Service would be doing ok if we didn't have to fund our retirement for people who are not even born yet and that is because of the government who over sees what we do even though we are NOT funded by tax money. And one more thing even UPS AND FEDEX has lost or messed up a package but I don't here anyone saying anything about them. Oh ya The Postal Service also delivers packages for UPS that people pay them to deliver. So if we are so bad why do they have us deliver their packages for them. Who's getting ripped off there. When they could of sent it through the Postal Service for cheaper.

the postal service could hire temp workers from temp employment agencies to work at the mail dist. centers, keep them open instead of closing 250 across the nation. temp workers are much cheaper, would that not save the postal service money?

The USPS needs to just deliver the mail and stop letting the local, and state governments interfere in it's delivery. Bad 911 addressing has been the biggest culprit in breaking the post office. Why would you spend 45 cents to send an one ounce letter to only get it back because someone somewhere changed the persons address. There is no direct problem with the employees of the USPS. Most of the problems are a result of employees there trying to follow procedures set down to anchor a person to a specific address by the 911 addressing authorities. The current beauracracy is allowing a conspiracy of government agency to circumvent peoples civil rights by tying all of their actions to a specific location. Ask yourself why would the DPS need to know your e-mail address. Sending e-mails while driving is illegal isn't it. No! If the USPS is to survive they should drop all of this specific address garbage and try delivering the mail and stop argueing with the customers about where they live, and allow more than one address to a specific address. These 911 addresses have no relativity to the location in which they are assigned , because the people who made them know nothing about the communities that they claim to be serving and the government seems to be giving these people a free hand to break the law in their incidious pursuit of forcing these addresses down the USPS postal patrons throats. 911 forced addressing is the general cause of all our economic problems and is being abused by the local politicians for monetary and political gain because there is no oversight of its application. The USPS needs to end its role as the addressing police and start trying to deliver the mail no matter how it's addressed.
